Black screen in Gnome after unlock

After a pacman -Syu that I ran yesterday I'm having this issue.  After I lock the screen and it powers off the display, when I try to unlock it, it stays black.  I only get a mouse cursor.  The system is fine, it's not frozen, the display is powered on and I can "unblack" it by Ctrl-Alt-F1 (takes me to gdm) and then Ctrl-Alt-F2 (takes me back to my session, now usable).

Edit: also I should add, while in "black mode" it's still fully operational, that is, I can type my password to unlock screen and then as I move the mouse the cursor changes shape (e.g. as hovering text, or links in a browser, etc.), but it's just all black.  I suspect it's a gnome-shell issue.

Was wondering if anyone had similar issues after a recent upgrade. Thanks for any hints!
