[SOLVED] Cannot mount UASP SATA drive via USB 3

Hey there,

I have a 6TB WD60EZRZ SATA drive and an DELOCK 61883 6Gb SATA to USB adaptor.

When I try to connect the (unformatted) drive via USB (both plugs connected for power supply), I cannot find the drive. lsusb shows that the connector is recognized but I am failing to mount the drive. I am on a Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H. I think UASP should work for this mainboard.

Of course in gparted I also cannot find the drive.

Does anybody has an idea for me?

EDIT: I have an DELL XPS 13 9350 where it behaves exactly the same: I can see the USB-SATA Interface "ASMedia Technology Inc. Name: ASM1051E SATA 6Gb/s bridge, ASM1053E SATA 6Gb/s bridge, ASM1153 SATA 3Gb/s bridge, ASM1153E SATA" but not the drive itself.

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot mount UASP SATA drive via USB 3

Do you hear your HDD spin up when you connect it? Can you feel that it's running when you touch it?

Maybe this adapter you have will only supply 5V through the SATA power connector because that's the only voltage it can get from the USB connectors. It might not be putting power onto the 12V pins that a SATA power connector has and your HDD might need 12V.

Perhaps using 5V and using 12V are a difference between a typical 2.5inch HDD and a typical 3.5inch HDD? Looking at the website of DeLock for this adapter you have, they write it's "suitable for 2.5inch HDDs", maybe that's supposed to mean 3.5inch aren't good?

You can see the SATA power connector pinout here, there's a bunch of 12V pins on it:

https://www.lifewire.com/sata-15-pin-po … ut-2624584

USB 3.0 pinout you can see here:

https://www.aggsoft.com/usb-pinout-cable/usb3.htm

And USB 2.0 is using the first four pins you see in the table for USB 3.0 and at the top in the graphic for the connector.

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot mount UASP SATA drive via USB 3

Thank you Ropid. You are right, I have read now the comments on amazon and they point out, that it is not suitable for 3.5" drives. This is a little annoying because it isn't explecitely written in the item description.
However, many thanks for that hint Ropid.
