Possible sdl2 errors with Unreal World

I recently got urw from aur and get occasional ctd errors when running it, once or twice a day, which is a real pain with permadeath games as the savefile can 'lose' items.

Running urw with debug logs enabled does not give any indication of programme errors. The console output is

ALSA lib pcm.c:8424:(snd_pcm_recover) underrun occurred
ALSA lib conf.c:1887:(_snd_config_load_with_include) _toplevel_:524:18:Unexpected char
ALSA lib conf.c:4016:(snd_config_update_r) /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf may be old or corrupted: consider to remove or fix it
/bin/urw: line 170: 20684 Segmentation fault      (core dumped) "${URW_BIN_DIR}"/"${URW_BIN}"

I do occasionally get something like the first line above from other games, but not a ctd with them. Alsa.conf was created January 2019, which does not seem old it matches, I think, the last alsa update, to be sure I forced a reinstall but it made no difference.

Any guidance on where to go next appriciated.
