Atheros AR9462 / NetworkManager hangs on unstable networks

I'm experiencing following issue with my laptop's wireless connection: sometimes, when I attempt to connect or am connected to the unstable network, such as Android AP, public (university, airports, cafe) networks, router network during configuration process (when router often restarts the AP), NetworkManager hangs, that is, there is no connection, nm-applet is unresponsive to the clicks, attempting to call nmtui in the terminal results in waiting, and soon even graphical environment freezes, until I SIGKILL NetworkManager process, after which I can try connecting again.

lspci reveals my network adapter to be (based on?) Qualcomm Atheros AR9462 Wireless Network Adapter.

What could cause such issue? I understand that description is really vague, however, it's really hard to predict when such issue will occur and thus I don't know when to look at the logs, but even then, looking at them (dmesg, journalctl for NetworkManager and wpa_supplicant) in retrospective doesn't reveal something obvious that could point at the problem. If you have any suggestions for better debugging, I would gladly attempt to follow them.
