ibus + anthy only working in certain applications in i3

I'm using ibus + anthy under i3, and the only place ctl+space (which I've designated for switching keyboards) works is Firefox (テスト, проверка), where I don't really need it.

Where I really need it to work is Telegram, Spacemacs, and the terminal (urxvt). I can get Russian input to work in urxvt and Telegram if I click on the icon in the taskbar, but not in Spacemacs (which is not urgent--I know emacs has its quirks).

Any advice will be appreciated.
