[SOLVED] "alsamixer" and "speaker-test" only executable by root?

Trying to get audio up with "alsa-utils" on a fresh Arch installation.

"alsamixer" and "speaker-test" both work fine as root (and sudo), but get the errors below when executed as regular user:

> alsamixer
ALSA lib dlmisc.c:287:(snd1_dlobj_cache_get) Cannot open shared library /usr/lib/alsa-lib/libasound_module_ctl_pulse.so ((null): /usr/lib/alsa-lib/libasound_module_ctl_pulse.so: cannot open shared opbject file: No such file or directory)
cannot open mixer: No such device or address

> speaker-test

speaker-test 1.1.8

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 1 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
ALSA lib dlmisc.c:287:(snd1_dlobj_cache_get) Cannot open shared library /usr/lib/alsa-lib/libasound_module_pcm_pulse.so ((null): /usr/lib/alsa-lib/libasound_module_pcm_pulse.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)
Playback open error: -6,No such device or address

Looking around for recommendations, I've tried adding the user to the "audio" group but that didn't help. (Although the ALSA Wiki says that shouldn't be needed.)

I also check and noticed that the "alsa-lib" directory doesn't exist in "/usr/lib". Seeing that the object files mentioned pulse I installed "pulseaudio" but that didn't change anything.

I think I must be missing something very simple since there doesn't seem to be any information out there on similar issues... Thanks in advance for your patience and help!

EDIT: Turns out I had a .asoundrc configuration file that was leftover from prior installation/experiments with other distros. Removing/commenting out the appropriate lines resolved the issue. Thank Trilby for pointing me in the right direction.

Remove pulseaudio, unless you really wanted it for something else.  Then fix your ~/.asoundrc, or post it's content here.

Re: [SOLVED] "alsamixer" and "speaker-test" only executable by root?

Thanks!

I removed pulseaudio when it didn't help my issue.

Below is the content of my .asoundrc:

# ALSA library configuration file

# Include settings that are under the control of asoundconf(1).
# (To disable these settings, comment out this line.)
</home/<username>/.asoundrc.asoundconf>

In the meantime I'm going to look into .asoundrc more.

This is SOLVED?  How?  Did you remove that ~/.asoundrc?  Where did that come from in the first place?

Wait, what distro are you actually using?

Re: [SOLVED] "alsamixer" and "speaker-test" only executable by root?

I kept the file for prosperity, but I commented out the line "</home/<username>/.asoundrc.asoundconf>", which allowed my account to access alsamixer and speaker-tester without elevating its access.

I've had this home directory for a long time (10+ years). It has gone through Ubuntu, Kali, Mint, etc. (I just keep bringing it with me from distro to distro.) This file must have came from one of the other distros I was using/playing with a long time ago.

I'm currently on Arch Linux. (Recently switched back after years away.)

Ah, bringing over junk from another distro would explain it.  You can just delete that file though.
