[Solved] X Server freezes when enabling display using Xrandr

Hi, I've been trying to setup my laptop (HP Spectre x360, 2017 with i5-7200U and HD620 graphics) to work with external displays. I have been able to get an external display to work correctly when I connect it then restart Xorg, or connect it before starting Xorg, but not once Xorg is running.

In order to reproduce the issue, I can connect a display then run

xrandr --fb 3840x1080 --output DP-1-1 --mode 1920x1080 --pos 1920x0 --output eDP-1 --pos 0x0 --auto

To put my laptop display next to the secondary display.

Here's my output from Xrandr with the display connected (after restarting Xorg to make it work)

I'm using awesomewm, but I have been able to reproduce this issue with i3.

Awesomewm does not log anything unusual to stderr when the freeze occurs, but emits the following log a bit after the freeze:

E: awesome: a_xcb_io_cb:402: X server connection broke (error 1)

Re: [Solved] X Server freezes when enabling display using Xrandr

The log is from a running server and does not seem to cover the incident.
The xrandr output shows that the external display runs at 3840x2160@30Hz, its default mode.
Anyway, does

xrandr --output DP-1-1 --mode 1920x1080 --right-of eDP-1

cause the same freeze?
What about

xrandr --output DP-1-1 --auto --right-of eDP-1

or

xrandr --output DP-1-1 --auto

?

Maybe relevant: do you also use a compositor like compton or xcompmgr?

Re: [Solved] X Server freezes when enabling display using Xrandr

I do use a compositor. I currently use

compton-tryone-git

from the aur. That was the issue, killing compton results in all 3 of the Xrander commands you suggested as well as  my initial one working fine. Thanks so much for your help!

For anyone interested: I went ahead and switched back to the version of compton in Community, but I can confirm the when using that version, this fix for Xcompmgr works for compton as well.
