[SOLVED - hardware issue] USB MIDI controller not recognized

I'm trying to use a USB DJ controller with my laptop (the Hercules DJControl Starlight: https://www.hercules.com/en-us/product/ … starlight/, site appears to be down right now). This device has a MIDI Controller and a sound card in it.

I'm able to use this device with another Arch Linux system (but I don't have that system with me right now).

The device is not recognized by my laptop. It is not shown in the output of lsusb (lsusb output does not change with the device plugged in vs not plugged in):

➜ ~ sudo lsusb
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 090c:1000 Silicon Motion, Inc. - Taiwan (formerly Feiya Technology Corp.) Flash Drive
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0c45:670c Microdia
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 04f3:2234 Elan Microelectronics Corp. Touchscreen
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0cf3:e301 Qualcomm Atheros Communications
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Here is the output of sudo journalctl -b: https://gist.githubusercontent.com/kerr … nalctl.log
Here is the output of sudo dmesg: https://gist.githubusercontent.com/kerr … /dmesg.log

In the above logs, I booted without the device plugged in, and plugged it in around 175 seconds after boot, or 09:20:37. Neither log shows anything interesting around that time.

I've tried plugging the device into the other USB port on the laptop, but that had no effect. I would try a different cable but I don't have one.

What should I do to debug this problem? I'm pretty stumped.

Re: [SOLVED - hardware issue] USB MIDI controller not recognized

The issue turned out to be the USB cable I was using. I'm guessing it's a power-only cable.
