Taking over and updating an AUR package

I have a package that is on the AUR but is significantly out of date. As the current maintainer has not updated in a while I thought I'd give that a go.
Trouble is, I don't know where to start looking at this thing.

I found a few things just looking at the .srcinfo and PKGBUILD. I found where the old application version is downloading and even where the files that are causing the error when loading the package. But I don't know what to do to update the dependencies and what not.

Where do I start with this?

The AUR package :: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/evelauncher/
The Error Message :: evelauncher: error while loading shared libraries: libprotobuf.so.16: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I was able to find the libprotobuff.so.** files but couldn't figure out how to tell them to use the newer version found in protobuf package or not use them at all and see what happens.

I have the link also to the current binaries. When I update the PKGBUILD and the srcinfo to use that instead it will still build fine but has the same error.

Re: Taking over and updating an AUR package

If upstream links against .16 then the sanest thing to do is to get them to update their software to use .18. Else you will have to bundle the older protobuf version or similar, which is rather ugly.
Edit: best solution might be to get upstream to provide the launcher as a flatpack instead, if they insist of only shipping it as binaries.
