Not getting xev KeyPress events from multimedia keys

I'm not able to see KeyPress events for my multimedia keys when testing out my keyboard in xev. (Note that I have other function keys that are all working as expected, including arrows, home/end, page up/down, etc.)

I have 6 multimedia keys that are all triggered using function keys: previous/next track, play/pause, volume up/down/mute.

To troubleshoot from the ground up I first made sure that OS sees the keys via showkey and noted the keycodes. I then used xkbcomp to export the current setting and verified that 1.) The associated keycodes (offset by 8) are in the xkb_keycodes section; and 2.) The mappings in xkb_symbols are correct.

Any idea what could be wrong?
