How to create Docker image/container from dockerfile?

At first I want to say that I don't fully understand what is the difference between docker container and docker image. I don't know what I have to create first: docker image or docker container. And when I create it will it be possible to have multiple versions: newer and older (something like creating snapshots).

What I want to do is creating docker image/container (as small as possible) with python 3 and copy to it my programs written in python, then copy that image/container to other computer. I know that it is possible to download created containers from docker hub site, but except downloading basic container that display short help message I don't know how to do. Also I want to learn how to do locally containers/images myself.

Can anybody who is using docker help me? Is it possible with docker to create single application running in container without operating system in that container?
