I'm browsing UTF-8 character sets at utf8-chartable.de/unicode-utf8-table.pl and there are many characters that are not displayed properly, I just see an upright rectangle. Maybe this is due to not having other languages fonts installed. I'd like to do so; what do I need? I've already installed `icu` package which is described as 'International Components for Unicode Library'.

You need to install fonts that will display the characters. For example, the Noto font is one of the better Unicode handling fonts. It is said to be able to display 65,535 different characters. But the Unicode 12 standard has more than 130,000 characters. You will have to identify, install, and configure fonts that can display the characters you need to see.

miomio:
The general advise from polyzen:
adobe-source-* otf-fira-{mono,sans} ttf-{dejavu,droid,indic-otf,liberation,symbola} otf-ipafont noto-fonts (more or less.).
A more comprehensive guide to free Unicode fonts, if you want to compose the set yourself.
I hope you know that the wiki has a list of fonts available in Arch Linux — if you want to have even wider choice. Be warned that many of them are in AUR.
A side note: consider replacing “UTF-8” with “Unicode” in the title. UTF-8 is a specific encoding. The character set is called Unicode.
