Wifi become "Hardward disabled" after suspend on HP Pavilion ab506tx

I use gnome as my desktop, and my laptop is HP Pavilion ab506tx.

As title mentions, the wifi will be unavailable after suspend, and both rfkill and the button on the keyboard can not make it available.
I have searched for solutions and none of them works. I also tried to change some settings in BIOS, but I can not find any of settings are related with wifi.

~ $ uname -a
Linux archlinux 5.0.9-arch1-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Apr 20 15:00:46 UTC 2019 x86_64 GNU/Linux

    link/ether e0:94:67:8b:ae:f2 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

~ $ rfkill list all
0: hci0: Bluetooth
	Soft blocked: no
	Hard blocked: no
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
	Soft blocked: no
	Hard blocked: no

After suspend, hard blocked of phy0 will become yes, and hci0 will disappear with unknown reason.

Thanks you your patient and advices.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wi … /rtl8723be?

That's just a guess though, do you actually have that hardware?

Otherwise, check the loaded kernel modules both before and after the problem. Vendor-specific modules can cause this sort of thing.

Thanks for your reply.

I don't have /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723ae.conf or /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf these two files.

But I got some information about the loaded kernel modules.

I don't have /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723ae.conf or /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf these two files.

Those files would only exist if you created them.

Do you have that wireless hardware? If so then try the suggested fix.

wmi_bmof 16384 0

Those appear to be vendor modules, hp_wmi in particular is a known trouble-maker.

Does blacklisting that module help?

Otherwise, is there anything relevant in the journal?

OK. I created those two file and write same things inside, but it didn't work.

Also I found that my kernel driver is r8169:

~ $ lspci -v
...
08:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 3165 (rev 81)
	DeviceName: IntelWLAN Intel 3165NGWG Stone Peak 1 ac 1x1 + BT 4 LE PCIe+USB NGFF 2230WW
Subsystem: Intel Corporation Dual Band Wireless AC 3165
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 52
	Memory at c6100000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=8K]
	Capabilities: <access denied>
	Kernel driver in use: iwlwifi
	Kernel modules: iwlwifi

09:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL810xE PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller (rev 0a)
DeviceName: Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company RTL810xE PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 19
	I/O ports at 4000 [size=256]
	Memory at c6004000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K]
	Memory at c6000000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
	Capabilities: <access denied>
	Kernel driver in use: r8169
	Kernel modules: r8169
...

so I wrote

options r8169 fwlps=0

into /etc/modprobe.d/r8169.conf, but not work.

I tried to blacklist hp_wmi, wmi_bmof, even r8169, by writting

blacklist hp_wmi
blacklist wmi_bmof
blacklist r8169

into /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, but not working, too.

By the way, I can still see hp_wmi and wmi_bmof in lsmod after I wrote them into blacklist file. Is it normal or I failed to blacklist them?

I have searched some information about radio killswitch, but nothing found.

Also, I tried to restart NetworkManager. The logs of network manager after restarting also make me confused:

But my wifi is still hardware disabled after restart network manager.

I also try another way I found, still not work.

That's for your ethernet interface, the wireless device is handled by iwlwifi: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wi … on#iwlwifi

I can still see hp_wmi and wmi_bmof in lsmod after I wrote them into blacklist file. Is it normal or I failed to blacklist them?

Did you reboot after creating the blacklist configuration file?

If so then you may have to regenerate the initramfs to remove them completely.

OK, that's weird. I have rebooted after creating the blacklist configuration file, so I tried to regenerate initramfs.

The way I found is to modify /etc/mkinitcpio.conf:

...
FILES=("/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist")
...

and run

$ mkinitcpio -p linux

I have tried to write

blacklist hp_wmi
blacklist wmi_bmof

or

install hp_wmi /bin/true

or (I don't know why /bin/true, so I change it to /bin/false)

install hp_wmi /bin/false

in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, but none of them banned hp_wmi successfully. Even if I change hp_wmi to iwlwifi, my wifi still works. (and hp_wmi is always shown in the lsmod list)
I also tried to remove the parentheses in mkinitcpio.conf:

...
FILES="/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist"
...

but nothing changed.

On another way, I try to disable power save of iwlwifi, by edit these two files:

# /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf
options iwlwifi bt_coex_active=0
options iwlwifi swcrypto=1
options iwlwifi power_save=0 d0i3_disable=0 uapsd_disable=0
options iwlwifi 11n_disable=8

# /etc/udev/rules.d/81-wifi-powersave.rules
ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", KERNEL=="wl*", RUN+="/usr/bin/iw dev $name set power_save off"

. It's not work.

Re: Wifi become "Hardward disabled" after suspend on HP Pavilion ab506tx

If the module is still being loaded then it must be called by another module so try the workaround listed in the ArchWiki:

# /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
install hp_wmi /bin/false

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … acklisting

I have tried this, but hp_wmi is still loaded.

~ $ lsmod | grep hp_wmi
hp_wmi 16384 0
sparse_keymap 16384 1 hp_wmi
rfkill 28672 8 hp_wmi,bluetooth,cfg80211
wmi 32768 2 hp_wmi,wmi_bmof
~ $ cat /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
install hp_wmi /bin/false

after `mkinitcpio -p linux` and reboot.

Re: Wifi become "Hardward disabled" after suspend on HP Pavilion ab506tx

Try blacklisting the wmi & wmi_bmof modules as well.

Can you remove it manually?

# modprobe -r hp_wmi

OK, I tried, but they are still loaded after rebuild and reboot.

~ $ cat /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
install hp_wmi /bin/false

Can you remove it manually?

# modprobe -r hp_wmi

I can manually remove hp_wmi, wmi_bmof, wmi, and they are really unloaded. But wifi will still be unavailable after suspend.

Re: Wifi become "Hardward disabled" after suspend on HP Pavilion ab506tx

I've tried directly remove hp_wmi.ko.xz wmi.ko.xz wmi_bmok.ko.xz in /lib/module/, and it finally not loaded.
But wifi still not available after suspend. Maybe these are not the real reason that break down my wifi.
