uim-fep input mode switching in console

I'm trying to use uim with mozc to get Japanese input on Arch. I followed the instructions on the wiki page and installed Japanese fonts, uim and uim-mozc and configured it as directed. I set the env vars and ran uim-xim using xinitrc (systemd didn't seem to work properly), and the IME works as intended on Firefox and any gtk/qt programs I've tried. However, it doesn't seem to work in the console.

Apparently you're supposed to use uim-fep for console applications. I've tried running it and it gives me a status indicator in my terminal, but it's stuck on romaji input mode (presumably) and I can't figure out how to change it. The wiki says it uses uim configs, but neither the hankaku/zenkaku button (default outside of console) and the default binding for a US keyboard (shift+space) work.

My terminal emulator is Kitty, but I've also tested xterm and qterminal with no luck. Also using X as my display server. Is there anything else I need to configure or can try?
