Text in popup messages appear as rectangles.

Ok, this is a question in 2 parts.

First, the title of the popup box appears in Japanese. This in itself is not a problem, but I don't remember making any settings to that effect. Does anybody know how to change that?

Second, the body of the popup is illegible. Maybe it's because the font doesn't have Japanese characters in it. Is there a way to change that font?

Regarding your 2nd problem : try to install some good fonts (ttf-dejavu from community, ttf-ms-fonts, maybe some other) and set firefox to use those fonts.
