Manually Compiling / Package Dependicies

Hello everyone,

I'm working on an experiment: Setting up an arch Linux server with every package (that is not provided by "base", "base-devel", "intel-ucode") built manually.

Why am I doing this (the downsides are obvious)?
1. I would like to learn more about linux and building/compiling. Installing arch alone is a good excercise, but compiling everything from source should provide one with a lot of insight about how packages work and depend on one another.
2. Just for fun. It's complicated and unneccesary on many levels but also an interesting challange.

As I starated the experiment, I realised that it would be very helpful to know more about the dependencies. Is there a dependency tree to which I can refer? Maybe pacmans database?

What else do I need to keep in mind?

Thanks in regards
Markus

You also may want to checkout Gentoo if you want to compile from source.

I ran a similar experiment several years ago (before I had to pay my own electricity bill!) and I agree with Zod that LFS would be better suited to your objectives. Arch and Gentoo make things easy for you, and provide PKGBUILDs and ebuilds and build wrappers for you, so ultimately what you learn is how to build packages on those systems, you don't really learn about the software you're building (it's the old IDE vs text editor argument).

Or the PKGBUILDs used to build them in the first place.  It's all right there.
