Hi,
I am trying to get new install of Arch up and running. Was having trouble with SLiM and started the below thread where I was advised to use XDM rather than SLiM:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=246492
My drive then crashed, to say this Arch install has not gone smoothly is an understatement. Now I have my new drive and have installed XDM and XFCE4 and when I boot I don't see XDM, it boots into the shell.
I used the below to install xorg:
pacman -S xorg xorg-xinit xorg-server Install xfce4
pacman -S xfce4
pacman -S xfce4-goodiesConfigure xfce
#cp /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc /home/me/.xinitrc
#echo exec startxfce4 > /home/me/.xinitrcInstall XDM
pacman -S xorg-xdm
echo startxfce4 > /home/me/.xsession
chmod 700 /home/me/.xsession
systemctl enable xdm.serviceAnd as I said, no GUI appears on booting, just the shell login.
Any ideas?

What instructions did you follow to initially install your system?
"UNIX is simple and coherent" - Dennis Ritchie; "GNU's Not Unix" - Richard Stallman

Also
systemctl list-unit-files --state=enabledOffline
Configure xfce
#cp /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc /home/me/.xinitrc #echo exec startxfce4 > /home/me/.xinitrc
Probably not related but you do realise that the 2nd line completely overwrites the copy made by the first?

He also seems to run it as root and I guess that's why Trilby asked. (While my guess on his problem is that there's still some active slim service or whatever)

In addition to the mistakes others have pointed out, post:
systemctl status xdmRecommend you delete the files you created under /home/me and try again as per the wiki.

The Arch wiki.
I am writing a script to do the install as I figure I go so I don't have to go through this again, so at the time these commands are executed I am chrooted, in response to seth's comments below.
The copy xinitrc I seem to have added myself, I think that was because one is not being generated. The rest as is per the wiki as far as I can see.

OK I just rebooted without making any changes and it works, and it keeps working. Weird.
I will make change suggested about for correctness purposes anyway.
It is not accepting my password which I assume is the same problem I was having with SLiM in other thread so I will resolve this thread and head back tot he other one.
