How to debug touchpad issues?

Hello friends,

my touch pad (Microsoft Surface Go / typecover) doesn't work after some system starts.

How to debug or how can I detect the source of this flawed behavior?

I would start with dmesg. Dump the output into a file when the system is behaving fine, and also when it is misbehaving. Then, search it for differences. For example, do

 grep -i error dmesg.out.good 

and

 grep -i error dmesg.out.bad 

return different things? If so then that's a good starting point.

Last time I had issues with peripherals randomly not working on boot I fixed it by updating my BIOS. No need to jump to conclusions, but it may be something to look into.
