How to capture a stream directly from a video card or a sound card

First, let me apologize for a possible redundancy of the question. I remember reading an Arch Wiki article on the subject. But now I cannot find it anymore, even with my best efforts.

There are several programs out there that are able to rip video material from the flash content of websites. However, sometimes it is more convenient to capture the video and the audio into a file directly from the hardware, i.e. the video card and the sound card. I remember trying this some years ago quite successfully, apart from a small synchronization discrepancy between the video and the audio. What is the program that captures media directly like this? Can you suggest a search string or a link that would refer me to the Arch Wiki article?

One may consult this good article on screen recording. A related Wiki article is entitled Screen capture.
