bypassing "execute file" dialog when opening a desktop shortcut

im curious how i can always choose "execute" in the popup when trying to open a desktop config file so the popup is never shown.

the dialog looks like this
http://img28104.imagevenue.com/aAfkjfp0 … _591lo.jpg

and the desktop config is

[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Name=Opera
GenericName=Web browser
Comment=Fast and secure web browser
TryExec=opera
Exec=opera %U
Terminal=false
Icon=opera
Type=Application
Categories=Network;WebBrowser;
MimeType=text/html;text/xml;application/xhtml_xml;x-scheme-handler/http;x-scheme-handler/https;x-scheme-handler/ftp;application/x-opera-download;
Actions=NewWindow;NewPrivateWindow;

[Desktop Action NewWindow]
Name=New Window
Exec=opera --new-window

[Desktop Action NewPrivateWindow]
Name=New Private Window
Exec=opera --private

stat `which opera`

Ensure it's executable for your user.

if it wasnt executable, wouldnt i see permission denied?
i dont seem to have a problem with the actual execution, i just wanted to get rid of the dialog that asks if i want to execute, execute in terminal or open. i want it to always execute.

i tried changing the owner of opera and the .desktop with

chown myuser /usr/bin/opera

and

chown myuser /home/myuser/Desktop/opera.desktop

so that stat returned

  File: /usr/bin/opera
  Size: 399 Blocks: 8 IO Block: 4096 regular file
Device: 812h/2066d	Inode: 423027      Links: 1

Change: 2019-07-11 11:53:51.511149927 -0500

but the dialog still appears.

forgot to mention im using jwm window manager, maybe that have more to do with this than arch linux?

Re: bypassing "execute file" dialog when opening a desktop shortcut

It has more to do w/ the actual runner that interprets the desktop service (some panel?)
What do you use to launch the service?

Something about that file makes the runner unhappy w/ it - apparently it's not the executable bit. Does it have a shebang?

file /usr/bin/opera

and please just post it as well.

not sure what im using to launch it.
i just copied the file from /usr/share/applications to /home/myuser/Desktop and attempt to double click it.

file returns

/usr/bin/opera: Bourne-Again shell script, ASCII text executable

Re: bypassing "execute file" dialog when opening a desktop shortcut

Double click it *from what*? What's your desktop shell?
How did you install archlinux?
