Mouse wheel doesn't work at all

Hi

I have just updated to kernel 5.2 and my mouse wheel stopped working.

when i run

libinput

there are no entries for wheel. Middle button (pressing wheel) works as usual.
It happens with all mice I have and on two different PCs.

Any ideas?
I also checked on LTS and it is the same.

Regards

Re: Mouse wheel doesn't work at all

Please post the output of uname -a and of ls -l /usr/lib/modules

Re: Mouse wheel doesn't work at all

Okay, it is not what I suspected.  I was checking that the kernel you are actually running could find its modules.  In retrospect, closer reading of your first post would have told me that.

Re: Mouse wheel doesn't work at all

Frankly speaking I've been having this problem for months with LTS but I am lazy so I simply switched to nonLTS version. Now it got 'corrupted' too.

Re: Mouse wheel doesn't work at all

What about evtest? (Could be the high wheel resolution patches…)

Re: Mouse wheel doesn't work at all

@seth: exactly the same. It reacts to all buttons, movements etc but no reaction on wheel.

Re: Mouse wheel doesn't work at all

For what it's worth, I got a new mouse about a month ago and it seemed like the scroll wheel was not working, but actually it was registering one scroll event every 120 clicks of the wheel. Because of this I strongly suspected the high-resolution scrolling patches, and downgrading to the LTS kernel caused the scroll wheel to work which was more evidence. The issue went away a few point releases later in the non-lts kernel though, so I didn't look into it more.

Re: Mouse wheel doesn't work at all

@chrisjbillington that may be the issue. Is it possible to control it in any way?

Re: Mouse wheel doesn't work at all

If there's no reaction at all I doubt that it's those patches. They have also been incorporated in the 5.0 kernel and should not be part of the LTS if that doesn't work either then this shouldn't be the underlying issue. Which mice are we talking about exactly, do they work on other operating systems?

Re: Mouse wheel doesn't work at all

@V1del:

Mice which do not work are: a4tech opto518 and Tesco TM300.
I have also borrowed and tested another mouse - Tracer Octavia 2 and that one works.

EDIT:

I have tested mice on another PC with Debian. And situation is exactly the same (two mice do not work, one does).
Debian details:

uname -a
Linux Serwer 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.39-1+deb8u2 (2017-03-07) x86_64 GNU/Linux

I have no idea how to justify it.

Re: Mouse wheel doesn't work at all

Try some linux live system w/ a dated kernel, eg. https://mirror.ungleich.ch/mirror/grml/ … 017.05.iso
I've (among others) a €5 china mouse, the wheel "broke" within a month or so ("broke", because it simply detached from the switch - 1 drop of superglue fixed the thing) - can't say about your mice, all info seems to be Polish?

Re: Mouse wheel doesn't work at all

@seth

I've tried with a system rescue cd and all mice work there so they are 100% functional.

kernel info:

Linux sysresccd 4.9.60-std512-amd64 #2 SMP Thu Nov 2 17:43:13 UTC 2017 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4670 CPU @ 3.40GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Re: Mouse wheel doesn't work at all

When you did evtest the mouse, did you scroll for like a really long time?
Any notable difference between the working and non-working mice? Eg. do the "broken" ones have a clickless wheel? Are they cordless (bluetooth)?

Re: Mouse wheel doesn't work at all

I think there was some change in mouse behavior/support with 5.2 kernel.

I have A4Tech Optical Mouse WOP-35, which is 5 buttons, 2 wheels (everything works with evtest, but for buttons 4 and 5 no action is set).

Before 5.2 kernel my second wheel just scroll page with different direction then first page, and since 5.2 kernel my second wheel scrolls page horizontally, if page allows to (is horizontal slider).

Re: Mouse wheel doesn't work at all

@Seth:
I tried to scroll really long as @chrisjbillington mentioned what the cause can be, but without effect. I did more than 300 rolls and one roll generates ~7 events (at least on working mouse wink ).
All mice have clickable wheel. "broken" ones are wired, while working one uses bluetooth. Also the working one is the newest one (bougth year ago, while broken ones are a few years old).

Re: Mouse wheel doesn't work at all

I have the same problem with my mouse - A4Tech X6-60D. Scrolling works on win10, but broke after some kernel updates near 5.1.x or 5.2 versions.

Re: Mouse wheel doesn't work at all

All mice have clickable wheel.

What I meant was: some mice have "free" wheeling, w/o notable segments, while others ("traditionally") advance in notable steps - whether or not the wheel is also a button that you can push down doesn't matter.

Re: Mouse wheel doesn't work at all

@seth:
One of the broken mice is 'free' and the other one has segments.
The working bluetooth mouse also has segments.

Re: Mouse wheel doesn't work at all

@Kicer please try applying
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/10986697/
Edit:
If that fails I would suggest bisecting the kernel to find the first bad commit.

Re: Mouse wheel doesn't work at all

Just for the record: mice works with:

$ uname -a
Linux Antergos 5.1.2-arch1-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed May 15 00:09:47 UTC 2019 x86_64 GNU/Linux

(checked on Antergos)

Re: Mouse wheel doesn't work at all

5.1.2 does not contain https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commi … 2a43c96c8f which was added in 5.2 which the commit I referenced attributes to causing the issue.
Have you been able to test the proposed fix?
