Hi guys
Its been a long time since i ve ysed arch and i am glad to be back. I am using openbox for my desktop
My laptop has both nvidia and intel.i install the nvidia driver and set the xrandr options as per the wiki. I have also set xrandr dpi to 96. I had to make the fonts bigger in obconf. From 9 size to 12. Everything is displayed ok , thunar, geany except chromium, firefox and opera. The fonts are too small . i have tried to set the xft dpi in xresources to 120 but this makes the fonts huge.
Any ideas?

Output of "xrandr -q"? (let's figure the actual physical resolution) - and also the xorg log to have a look at the actual optimus configuration.
If you use xrandr to set the DPI, make sure to run that before and GUI process (and esp. openbox) and don't fork it in order to have the setting applied everywhere.

THanks for the reply. I managed to improve the issue with the other browsers by increasing the font using lxappearance. I feel a bit silly now , but the url bar of chrome still has small fonts. Since we got so far it would be great if we could find out any issue with my dpi.

The physical resolution is 142 DPI (your monitor is ~5cm wider than A4 and ~2cm shorter?), that should grow your fonts considerably compared to 96DPI
You're running on the nvidia chip but pipe stuff through the intel one, nvidia defaults to 75DPI, intel to 96DPI, so you will have to set the DPI yourself and I doubt that the DPI option for the nvidia driver in an xorg config will work (overridden by intel)
=> you want to run "xrandr --dpi 142" very early in the GUI session script, check "xdpyinfo | grep resolution" to ensure its not overridden.
You can also set this for xft.
As mentioned, this will grow all fonts considerably, so ensure you're using proper point sizes (the idea is that 9pt looks the same whether you've got 72 dpi or 240 - except much smoother w/o antialiasing in the latter case)

Thanks a lot for the informative response. I am running xrandr 96 at the moment so i should change that to 142 in the xinitrc.
May i ask how did you determime this dpi? For educational reasons?:)

dots per inch - the output geometry and the pixels are listed. Then I ask "unit" to convert the metric gemometry into the inch nonsense ;-) and divide the pixels by it (1920px/344mm = 1920px/13.543307" = 141.7674, same for the height, but usually thei're about square)

I have set the xrandar to 142 in the xinitrc file and also the xft dpi to 142 ine xresources but chromium/firefox are really huge. Changing the size of the font doesn't help either. I don't know what is going wrong. Thunar on the other hand looks just fine.

I am not sure if it is the fonts the problem or the dpi? It makes everything big.Even urxvt becomes huge . In geany it looks tolerable and in thunar is ok. I have attached screenshots to show what i mean. I don't know how to solve it exactly. Having dpi 96 and big fonts is better than this but i really don't want to use the wrong dpi

Did you scale the images? They're 1600x900, not 1920x1080… so the physical resolution would be 118dpi, but this seems to be the wrong screen configuration.
Is your current resolution in xrandr -q still 1920x1080?

Actually no i haven't scaled the images. Checking the properties of the image is 1920x1080. Maybe is imgur doing? But tinypic also show them in 1600x900

urxvt looks weird, mostly because that's not a monospace font.
If you want the fonts to be smaller, just configure smaller fonts.
If you diverge from the actual, true resolution you might run into trouble because the physical resolution (142dpi) is now different from the logical one (eg. 96dpi) and next to dedicated configs (scale factors), applications can randomly rely on one or the other.

I will have to measure it and get back to you. It is a 15,6 inch screen .
Sorry again but i still don't get it what i should do exactly . I can either use 96dpi and bigger fonts but you don't recommend this since it may have reliability issues with specific applications. Or option 2 to use 142 dpi but with even smaller fonts than 8 pt ?

Since the DPI *can* affect more than just fonts (eg. svg icon) you'd in this case actually be better off forcing the logcal DPI anywhere between 96 and 142, as you prefer, and deal w/ the rough edges one by one.
It's important to set that DPI everywhere and expecially w/ xrandr.
Since we've the output at proper rendering, I can still read stuff at 67% of the physical DPI (what would be 96dpi in your case) but it'S not funny. You're probably shooting for 85% ie. 120dpi …

Thanks again for the info. Yes the problem is not the fonts as much rather the huge ui of gtk applications such chromium, firefox when using 142 dpi. With 96dpi the ui is smaller but so are the fonts. There is an option to force scaling on chrome . maybe i could try that to see if it improves.

Though fonts often will have different ratios depending on the font size (eg. 9pt being some stretched 8pt but not higher or similar effects) and that'd depend on the DPI (as well) because it determines the pixel size for the font size.
