I tried installing sawfish, as it's the best darn WM out there to replace metacity out there. anyway i go to start my gnome-session from GDM and it stops while loading the WM. so I log in on the console and do a "startx" to see the errors, and this is what i get.
error--> (file-error "No such file or directory" "sawfish/wm/misc")
This didn't happen on the i386 pkg which i just migrated from. So i know my .sawfish stuff is OK.
I did look into the problems people were having with permissions, and everyone has read accesss to the misc.jl file it's refering to.
any thoughts? (more info available by request)

Hi hugin,
is there an option to run sawfish with -d or --debug to get some more information about it!
Because i can't try the package at the moment.
or my second thought is,
is there a folder avalible with the name "sawfish/wm/misc". Because this was the problem what brings sawfish to the error.
greetings

can somebody compare the output of "pacman -Ql sawfish | wc" for i686 and x86_64! maybe another smp issue. try ro recompile the package using makepkg -j1.

I'll give it a shot Andy, as well as getting you that output (i still have a x86 laptop), unless someone beats me to it.

OK, first -- the 'makepkg -j1' didn't work. i still got an error saying my session didn't last 10 seconds.
now the output from 'pacman -Ql sawfish | wc' comes out like this:
AMD64: "753 1506 42478"
i686: "754 1508 42916"
I don't know quite what that means, but there is the info as requested Andy, but I have a feeling that those numbers are supposed to match.
thanks for the help.

I have recompiled the package with -j1. You may check it out.
http://archlinux.org/~andyrtr/sawfish-1 … pkg.tar.gz
Please start X from commandline to get a better error message! I checked Gentoo and Mandriva packages but cannot see any important x86_64 fix.

ok, that didn't work either... the only error message i get is the one i posted before. (that is from the 'startx' command.) From what i can tell, there is no debug or verbose or anything like that.
Now on to what i've learned; I'm apperently running an SMP PREEMPT kernel, where as the xorg package wasn't compiled on one. You mentioned something about smp problems. I'm new to the Arch64, so if there was something I missed somewhere about doing something, or running a non-smp kernel or something, i'll gladly do it.
if you got any more ideas about how i can get more errors or something, let me know.

smp: some build processes are broken when you run them with more than -j1. They often break or more tricky they build but miss some files.
As I cannot see any file missing here in the pkg try to touch the missing file. Maybe locate it before exactly on i686. Then the error should disappear or change.

well, I got it working.
I used the CVS version from their website. Don't know what the issue is. But it did bring up a new issue. My theme, uses the font lucida ... which i have installed, but sawfish can't find it. I know it's installed because i can find it in 'xfontsel'. So i don't know why it's doing that, I seem to get that error alot.
thanks for your idea's AndyRTR.
