I have an issue with screen tearing, when scrolling in web pages. So I read this:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … en_tearing
, and the command
$ nvidia-settings --assign CurrentMetaMode="nvidia-auto-select +0+0 { ForceFullCompositionPipeline = On }"solved it. But according to the Wiki, to make it permanent, you have to make
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf
Section "Device"
Identifier "Nvidia Card"
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
BoardName "GeForce GTX 1050 Ti"
EndSection
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Device0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
Option "metamodes" "nvidia-auto-select +0+0 {ForceFullCompositionPipeline=On}"
Option "AllowIndirectGLXProtocol" "off"
Option "TripleBuffer" "on"
EndSection, but this "fucks up" my system. It gets all black when "startx"... how do I work around this?
What I did, was that I first just added this file to xorg.conf.d/, afterwards i copied /etc/X11/xorg.conf to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf, and added the lines to the file.

Please post outputs and commands in [ code ] [ /code ] tags
Remove your "own" generated xorg.conf they usually lead to conflicts with other snippets. Also this fix is often not just "generally" applicable. If your environment already uses a proper compositor, it is counter-productive to enable the fullcompositionpipeline. What environment are you starting which DE/WM, and how? Post config files related to the way you start X and post a Xorg log when running into the black screen issue.
Also clarify "tearing" on websites, is it just websites? Do other standard window movements work? Which browser? FWIW you could also just opt to run the nvidia-settings command during x startup as opposed to a static config, or you might have an issue with triple buffering, and simply commenting that line while keeping the composition pipeline enabled would suffice.

Is there another solution to this, other than enable the fullcompositionpipeline? Perhaps this issue is not what is called "screen tearing" after all?
I'm using xfce4, and starting with startx:
~/.xinitrc
exec startxfce4(On a curious note, when I try openbox this doesn't occur.. weird.)
By "tearing" I mean that there are some visual disturbances when scrolling web pages, specially pages with many images. It occurs when I scroll, but stops when I'm finished scrolling. Enabling "smooth scrolling" in the web browsers doesn't fix it. It occurs in every browser.
Shall I post the whole Xorg log? If this can be solved in a way that is more productive I may try that first. ![]()

Since openbox doesn't use any compositor by default, that points to a likely cause : problems with the compositor you're running with xfce.
Are you using xfce with xfwm as window manager ?
If so, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xfwm#Video_tearing
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

I believe I do, xfwm4 is installed. I just installed the xfce4 package.
Alas, the "Synchronize drawing to the vertical blank option" didn't solve this...
(I Tried openbox again... seems there really are the same issue there, only to a less degree...)

Although probably not relevant to your current issue your ~/.xinitrc is broken.
You should read the xinit wiki page and fix it.

It's an example - and not a very good one…
Try /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf
Section "Device"
Identifier "Nvidia Card"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "metamodes" "nvidia-auto-select +0+0 {ForceFullCompositionPipeline=On}"
Option "AllowIndirectGLXProtocol" "off"
Option "TripleBuffer" "on"

Thanks. I read up on it and fixed it now. I don't see any differences in this current issue, but best to keep things in order.

I tried doing this enable compositionpipeline graphically and saving this to xorg.conf graphically, but it's just the same problem then. The screen is black. But if I switch to another tty and back, I see the desktop as normal.
Is is safe to paste Xorg log full?
But if it is another solution that is better then compositionpipeline, I would do that first...

"graphically" means "using nvidia-settings"? DON'T! It writes you a static xorg.conf full of cruft. Also if your broken 20-nvidia.conf is still around, you'll still have a broken server layout. Remove the generated xorg.conf and fix the 20-nvidia.conf.
You can then post the full Xorg log fine, it contains no private data (unless you chose an embarrassing hostname ;-)

I have now done this, and tested out .xinitrc this way (same problem as before; black screen; the black screen doesn't come when running this manually afterwards):

There's still the nvidia generated /etc/X11/xorg.conf … The server comes up fine though, detects your output and sets the proper resolution.
Remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf and comment the nvidia-settings call in your xinitrc: does the session now start as expected?
Also: elaborate on "black screen": do you see a blinking cursor or a mouse cursor (maybe move the mouse) or is the screen entirely black? Does this also happen when eg. starting openbox instead of xfce?
Your xinitrc still seems broken, btw.

Is there another solution to this, other than enable the fullcompositionpipeline?
You could try installing and using compton as your compositor (I believe compiz would also work but it is much heavier and I have not tried) - make sure to turn off 'Enable diplay composition' in Window managers tweaks.
Works for me except very occasionally when streaming video such as youtube - but even this is fine most of the time.

I have the same problem: after the last update Xfce won't start properly anymore with "metamodes" "nvidia-auto-select +0+0 {ForceFullCompositionPipeline=On}" enabled in 20-nvidia.conf. I only get a black screen and mouse cursor.
To get the full desktop back I can either switch to another tty and then back into Xfce or start the terminal via keyboard shortcut and call nvidia-settings --assign CurrentMetaMode="nvidia-auto-select +0+0 { ForceFullCompositionPipeline = On }" from history.
I fixed the problem by disabling ForceFullCompositionPipeline in 20-nvidia.conf and adding nvidia-settings --assign CurrentMetaMode="nvidia-auto-select +0+0 { ForceFullCompositionPipeline = On }" to Xfce Application Autostart.
