[Solved] Possible HDD failure, not sure what to look for

I believe my hard drive might be failing but I'm not entirely sure what to look for and could use some assistance (I have never had a drive fail before).

My configuration:
500GB M.2 SSD (root drive)
3TB WD Black (home drive)

Yesterday my computer crashed. When I rebooted it, it successfully initialized my root drive and then froze where it usually initializes my second (home) drive. I did a cold reset and all seemed to be normal so I just ignored it. Today, I booted up to it freezing in the same manor. I have tried reseating the cable, different cables, etc. and I still get the same problem.

However, I was able to put it into another computer and copy my data over using rsync (with errors) and test it using smartctl. Here is the output:

Other than it having a pretty high power on time, I'm not sure what else to look for and could use some help.

Thank you in advance.

EDIT: The drive manufacturing date is in October 2013, so it's almost 6 years old.

Re: [Solved] Possible HDD failure, not sure what to look for

Looks fine, however you might want to run a complete extended test to be sure. You might want to post a journal log from a faulty boot, maybe some telling information was written before the freeze (since your root partition should be fine)

With the drive removed from the system, it continued into emergency mode instead of freezing and I was able to login and export the journal log. Here's a journal log from a boot that failed. They all seem to end at the same point. Running extended test now, will update when completed.

Re: [Solved] Possible HDD failure, not sure what to look for

Could be a fs level corruption instead. Have had that happen a few times.

Extended (6 hour) test came back with no errors. Filesystem seems to be clean according to fsck.

Can you boot the multi-user.target?

I think you might be on to something. I successfully booted to the command line, logged in, and can view my files. This doesn't seem like a hard drive problem at all now. Perhaps I jumped the gun on that conclusion. Where do I go from here?

EDIT: So out of curiosity, I set the default back to graphical.target and used ctrl+alt+F3. It is in fact booting but just not reaching the graphical target. It made it look like it was hanging on the hard drive but it actually is just stuck trying initialize SDDM. When I manually start sddm.service, I get a blank screen with a blinking cursor.

EDIT 2: I honestly don't know what to say. I pacman -Syu'd for the hell of it and now its working again. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Cool.
Please always remember to mark resolved threads by editing your initial posts subject - so others will know that there's no task left, but maybe a solution to find.
Thanks.
