Network routing: trying to troubleshoot random slowdown of traffic

Hi all,

I hope my question is within the scope of this forum. Please feel free to redirect me if not.

I'll be more expansive in my initial post such that it will mean I can provide any further information/logs/stats as necessary.

My problem is this:

My internet access is via wifi  through a WAP in an adjacent room and to which I have full access. It is about 4m from my machine, with a stone wall in between. There is direct line of sight. Despite having three other devices connected (at times) to my this network, it is only this machine here that suffers these random but REALLY annoying slowdowns. These take the form of either a pacman request (cmd) leaving me with a blank line - no cursor, no download, no activity nothing followed by an eventual timeout, or a web page loading - a page perhaps I have accessed many times - only to now be met with any number of messages like "error resolving host..." or "your network settings have changed" followed by a white error page - as indeed when I went to post this very page I was met with "unable to connect". One way I can seem to fix this problem some of the time is to simply click on the connection applet, and which restarts the connection, and again did just this now and the page reloaded correctly. After normal function is restored it could be minutes, hours or days yet at some point things will again lock up as before and my internet becomes unusable. NONE of the other devices (android phone, android tablet, laptop running Solus Budgie) ever have these issues. All devices are in the same location looking at the same network.

I find this annoying and REALLY want to understand what is going on, even if I have to just live with it.

I've optimised the network for the conditions (single 20GHz band, one channel, optimised beacon and DTM), have installed a new wifi card in my computer, installed Arch from the ground up starting with new disk partitions. With a stable DE using NetworkManager I have checked through the wiki and ensured that my card is properly supported, has drivers, they are loaded etc. and that I have regulatory domain set plus anything else I could think of.

my 'resolv.conf' looks as expected - I input my ISP's DNS servers into the WAP believing this would be one less request to make, and those same addresses appear in resolv.conf.

My suspicion about this troublesome network is that my ISP has been having real issues with their regional DNS which have been going on for most of the past year. Since we are a rural community I don't expect them to be fixing things anytime soon. In the meantime I thought of using public DNS. It should be noted that here in France the user terms and conditions grant the ISP the right to deep packet inspection - which is something I know they carry out on some or other basis. I don't know if this would have any impact on network traffic.

Question: Does anyone happen to know, before I look at other troubleshooting methods, whether supplying, say, CloudFlare's public DNS - either inside the routing for my WAP or within my local 'resolv.conf' overrides the ISP DNS? Would such requests get sent from my WAP directly upstream via the ISP, or would their router also want to inspect this request and redirect to 1.1.1.1 via their own DNS?

Am I adding unnecessary complexity? Should I be looking elsewhere? Could I test for browser issues instead? (I use Brave and Firefox but NO idea at all how to examine their behaviour when a page request is generated). Or is it a sensible idea to try to embed my DNS of choice within my network settings?

Re: Network routing: trying to troubleshoot random slowdown of traffic

DPI would impact all clients alike and doesn't work w/ https at all (but could lead to slow/unstable WAN if your ISP is sufficiently inept)
Changing the DNS won't change this and I also doubt that a crappy DNS would slow down the network, notably affecting only one client.

Resolver configuration depends on how you manage the network configuration (NM, systemd-networkd, netctl, … and how it's actually configured, notbaly whether resolved or things like stubby or dnsmasq are involved)

Let's get some better idea about the system, post the complete output of "sudo journalctl -b" after you experienced the issue during this boot.
Please use BBS "code" tags or eg. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pastebin

Re: Network routing: trying to troubleshoot random slowdown of traffic

Thank you @seth, already very helpful.

I'll post my output below - apologies but your included link wasn't quite clear enough as to what I was expected to do. I'll use formatting and paste inline this time.

Before I do though, I'll just add the following information such that a) others might find something useful and b) because the output I'm pasting will reflect aspects of the config I'm about to explain.

My ISP does not provide genuine IPV6 address resolution. They have what I believe is called a 6 to 4 tunnelling server? So it's a /64 suffix. But since this is only applied anyway to any clients connected directly to the ISP modem, and since the Archer I'm using doesn't offer IPV6 either, I turned off IPV6 (set to 'ignore') in my nm-connection-manager because this has been suggested as one way to help.

With regard to improper resolution: yup, can totally accept this, but my installation was done on a basis of "unless you need to, don't touch it" kinda thing and which is the general vibe I got from the Arch wiki and instructions i.e. there are some sensible defaults set, so unless one has a special need for some other config, why not just leave it alone. THAT is why I went with just installing wpa_supplicant and NetworkManager because when I set up the live installer it offered to create a wpa_passphrase for wireless connection, and I saw no need to deviate from that despite it may turn out that I've omitted to add or configure some further package. I'm comfortable enough in cmd so happy to use netctl or some other if that proves necessary.

Anyway, that said, I rebooted and fortunately (or not) the error appeared immediately. On loading the browser (restore last session) I was greeted with a blank page and a configuration error. Some clicking later, a reset the connection etc. I did no more but simply grabbed journalctl output to paste here:

Re: Network routing: trying to troubleshoot random slowdown of traffic

Something truncated the journal output to 106 characters wide and the initial part of the boot is missing.
How many network services are enabled?  It appears at least netctl and NetworkManager are active. What is the output of the following?

systemctl list-unit-files --state enabled

Link repeatedly drops with

rtl8821ae: Polling FW ready fail!! REG_MCUFWDL:0x00070706 .

Re: Network routing: trying to troubleshoot random slowdown of traffic

There're at least dhcpcd and NetworkManager (which operates on dhcp4) which will sufficiently explain all problems.

Next to loqs' request, also run

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'f:1=<-' ix.io

and post the link you receive.

Re: Network routing: trying to troubleshoot random slowdown of traffic

Sorry about the truncation.

systemctl list-unit-files --state enabled

autovt@.service enabled
dbus-org.freedesktop.nm-dispatcher.service enabled
dbus-org.freedesktop.resolve1.service enabled
dbus-org.freedesktop.timesync1.service enabled
dhcpcd.service enabled
display-manager.service enabled
getty@.service enabled
lightdm.service enabled
NetworkManager-dispatcher.service enabled
NetworkManager-wait-online.service enabled
NetworkManager.service enabled
systemd-resolved.service enabled
systemd-timesyncd.service enabled
remote-fs.target enabled
pamac-cleancache.timer enabled

I noted the drop, but have NO idea what "polling FW" even means.

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'f:1=<-' ix.io ... has been running for a minute or more. I have no output, the terminal is just blank where the output should be, there's not even a blinking cursor. Finally I receive

curl: (6) Could not resolve host: ix.io

I've tried three times but the same result

Thank you to everyone helping me to fix this. Clearly the issue seems to have got worse, but receiving help is hugely encouraging smile

Re: Network routing: trying to troubleshoot random slowdown of traffic

You randomly can't resolve ix.io because of your ongoing network issues…

Stop and disable "dhcpcd.service "

pamac-cleancache.timer enabled

Is this Manjaro-Archlinux?

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'f:1=<-' ix.io ... has been running for a minute or more.

No no! Please don't worry - I read the rules. This is NOT Manjaro or any prebuilt installation. That service is there because I did use Manjaro, and I installed Pamac on here because I liked it. I was led to believe that package managers are system agnostic, so felt it would be okay.

I've disabled the dhcpcd.service and rerun that curl script, but I'm still getting the same reply:

curl: (6) Could not resolve host: ix.io

Obviously I have some form of internet working because I am composing this on the same machine.

Re: Network routing: trying to troubleshoot random slowdown of traffic

Oh dear... this is going from bad to worse ;/

Something appears to have screwed up some part of the installation because now I'm getting

bash: dig: command not found

despite I know that this is included in one of the base packages, and particularly since I had been happily using iwconfig for example to check my wireless card.

And even worse (or not) while I'm still able to use the internet to write and post here, I now cannot use pacman at all because it just hangs at

:: Synchronising package databases

so cannot reinstall or try to otherwise add the 'dig' command back. I might point out that during the course of the troubleshooting a recent reboot ended in several boot hangs (my computer has otherwise been utterly reliable and trouble free) that were "micro code" errors, and a big message about recovering the journal. I think it might be reinstall time AGAIN.

Sorry about this. I've just reset the WAP just in case there was something in there, but that hasn't helped.

bind-tools which supplies dig is not in the base group.  Can the system still ping by ip address? `ping 1.1.1.1`

Re: Network routing: trying to troubleshoot random slowdown of traffic

So... some progress! It came about almost accidentally...

I reset the WAP. I mentioned above that since it was a 6to4 tunnel and that the ISP router is only going to hand out an IPV6 address to the WAP and no more, I had set my connection to "ignore" the IPV6.

While waiting for another reboot of this machine, I idly turned on the IPV6 addressing for the WAP.

Suddenly my connection has been restored! But... there's more...

Pacman now connecting, just did an update. However, I see from my connection information that my "default route" has an IPV6 address ONLY. There are no entries for IPV4.

The above curl script still does not work, but I can indeed ping 1.1.1.1 successfully.

I'm now going to install dig and report back.

Pacman now again refusing to work. It's almost 01:00am here, so I'll pick this up again tomorrow. In the meantime will look into my DNS config and see if I can un-puzzle any of this.

Thanks for the help smile

Re: Network routing: trying to troubleshoot random slowdown of traffic

Okay, updates!

I've had a working connection most of today despite it STILL presents me with things like blank browser pages with "your connection settings have changed" and which, if I then reload, usually load fine.

I've made two changes today. I was reading around trying to shed light on my problems, and found a post on a website for Ubuntu. That link (I'll try to find and post it here if wanted) suggested that

/etc/resolv.conf

was symlinked to

/run/systemd/resolve/stub-resolv.conf

but which should have instead symlinked to

/run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf

So... I made that change and voila! my internet returned! Patchy, and a bit unstable, but it worked. Furthermore so did pacman.

Second change I made was simply to uninstall netctl and which was the result of mistyping - I'll explain: I accidentally hit 'ctrl+alt+F3' which booted me into a terminal session. Thinking I could get straight back to where I meant to be I hit 'alt+ctrl+F1' but instead of getting to the dm session greet I was met with a message saying (will have to look up exact wording but that requires logging out) that my wifi device wlp6s0 could not start a netctl profile!

No idea what caused that but I just removed the netctl package.

Anyway, I've now been able to run the two scripts as asked above.

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'f:1=<-' ix.io

http://ix.io/1SCC

and

dig @80.10.246.132 (my ISP primary DNS)

Any further comments or suggestions most welcome. I really don't mind being told I shouldn't have hacked about or whatever - all I'm interested in is having stable, usable internet. That said, a new WAP router arriving Weds because I think this one's had too many 'brownouts'.

Re: Network routing: trying to troubleshoot random slowdown of traffic

With /run/systemd/resolve/stub-resolv.conf uses 127.0.0.53 (systemd-resolved) which was failing to resolve anything for currently unknown reason.
With /run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf uses your ISP's DNS server which works.

Re: Network routing: trying to troubleshoot random slowdown of traffic

Aha! So, it's fine that I make that change then? Obviously 'out of the box' would be better, but am I losing/gaining anything either way? I could try to troubleshoot the stub resolver. Is it worth the time/effort or does it all amount to the same thing finally?

Oh wait... should I not have the local loop set to 127.0.0.1 in

/etc/hosts

is that why the stub resolver won't work?

Am interested to understand, it's not an idle question. Always prefer things to work the way they were designed smile

Re: Network routing: trying to troubleshoot random slowdown of traffic

You still have dhcpcd running next to networkmanager.
The will get into a race and kick each other nerwork connection.

Potential systemd-resolved issues would reside on top of that, ensure to read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Systemd-resolved to understand what it is and what it does and consider simply not using it: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ne … openresolv (iff you  want to go w/ networkmanager)

This is completely unrelated to resolving localhost.localdomain & localhost as  127.0.0.1 in  /etc/hosts.

Re: Network routing: trying to troubleshoot random slowdown of traffic

Thank you, @seth - I have stopped and disabled dchpcd.

I will/am/have been reading the wiki on ALL subjects relating to networking. If I'm allowed to say so - it gets REALLY overwhelming! I know that it was written by people who understand their subject, but coming to it as a new user? Easy to end up in a fog with total information overload. From the simple question "how do I get a wireless connection up and running" I found out I was reading stuff about NSS, ip routing tables, resolver stubs, the in and outs of how ideas about routing have been addressed in code... with NSS and glib now preferred over an outdated other system... etc. etc.. blimey... all I wanted was a stable wireless connection wink

However, trying to be constructive - I actually CHOSE to use systemd-resolved because errr.. the wiki suggested it. If I can make a constructive criticism it would be that it's really not clear to the new user how ALL the concepts relate together. Individually they're well explained, but it seems there are essentially separate 'models' of a good networking system, each of which has discrete components but which do not play well with others.

Anyway yes, I am looking to better understand it all, and would like to have it optimised... so I'll sleep on it, and sit down tomorrow with two gallons of VERY strong coffee... and go back to learning how internet protocols are implemented in software, how and why code is structured in particular ways, all in the hope that I'll finally get a clear picture of what happens between clicking on a search link and the content appearing in my browser smile

Re: Network routing: trying to troubleshoot random slowdown of traffic

From the simple question "how do I get a wireless connection up and running"

"wifi-menu" - tbh. a network stack can be arbitrarily complex but some things are just over-engineered, NIH or simply dumb.

I'm gonna say your prime issue is that you've been concurrent nework managing services, which is a regular cause for issues (and I will point out that the wiki explicitly says to not do that tongue)

Other than that, getting a basic network connection up (given your HW as usable driver support, looking at you, broadcom) isn't very complicated and you should start there and worry about more complicated things afterwards.

Idk where the wiki says "use systemd-resolved" but especially if you do have a consumer router (which will typically provide caching DNS) that's nonsense. dnsmasq and stubby are local resolvers w/ useful additional features, systemd-resolved is a solution in search for a problem. And my personal opinion is: not a very good one. (The main purpose seems to provide DNS resolution via dbus, what is nuts. And it breaks expected behavior of DNS cascades by design)

Again appreciate your constructive input. Will go away and leave you good people in peace, and mark as resolved appropriately. Just to point out re the above that umm... yeah... I wish!

Please understand that I didn't set out to over-complicate this. Booting from the live installer and setting up wpa and wifi-menu was a doddle. Once I was in, I went about recreating that exact same setup.

It's only since then, with random slowing down, disconnects, resolving errors that I'm even here wink  I'd read what I could, did the expected and tried to fix it myself but couldn't. Days later, and fantasising about throwing the entire box down the stairs and running it over... well - then I came to find help. I didn't want it to be complicated, it just seemed that the reasons for the problems weren't at all obvious, which is why I was even digging about in the configs.

Had it all 'just worked' I'd have been fine. New WAP arriving... might also help. Otherwise yes, going to go back through everything, re-read everything and then reconfigure, uninstall, stop, disable as necessary.

All that said - I'm already much wiser smile

Re: Network routing: trying to troubleshoot random slowdown of traffic

Well... after all that hmm

Spent last night and this morning sorting things out. Have the simplest network connection - Networkmanager and its applet.

I removed any other packages I don't need, ensured any other service is disabled.

But I'm now starting to think this error lies somewhere else! Since other machines on the network are fine, I'm suspecting hardware?

I can't afford a new computer, and it's old enough I doubt parts are easy to come by...

My internet is sporadic. One moment it's fine. Beautiful, lovely page loading or package downloads... nice and speedy. And then, for NO reason I can think of I'm met with (e.g.) a browser blank page "your network settings have changed" followed almost immediately by it reloading itself!

I'm stuck. I'm stuck and I'm fed up. I feel I've spent three days banging my head on a wall - I'm back where I started, and I've STILL NO blasted clue about  WHAT IS GOING ON!

sad

Re: Network routing: trying to troubleshoot random slowdown of traffic

Updated journal?

Try passing

rtl8821ae.swenc=1 rtl8821ae.ips=0 rtl8821ae.swlps=0 rtl8821ae.fwlps=0 rtl8821ae.aspm=0

to the kernel, see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … le_options & https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Kernel_parameters

This will disable wifi power saving and HW encryption (stuff will still be encrypted, but by the CPU)

Re: Network routing: trying to troubleshoot random slowdown of traffic

Ooh! Now we might be getting somewhere wink

Just to catch you up: been tinkering all day. It occurred to me at some point that maybe these issues are occurring elsewhere, and that it might not be faulty hardware. I thought I'd just check what Brave thought it might be doing about proxy or network connections, it being very 'locked down' and all. I clicked on the appropriate settings menu item to be met with a message telling me that (again, from memory as it's since been uninstalled) 'unfortunately your system does not comply...' or some such message, but asking me to fear not and refer to the manual to see how to check my settings. When I got to cmd to find "page not found" and that there was NO manual either... well... out it went, along with Pamac

I then did a bit of system maintenance and found a whole bunch of broken symlinks (I had Gnome DE briefly installed before I gave up completely) so I removed those...

Before adding your kernel params above I was already feeling things improving.

I booted with the above, and pleased to see that, for example, session restore on the browser brought back existing pages VERY quickly (they're not all cached). Clicking on the "reply" button here again induced one of the long waits I get

waiting for bbs.archlinux.org...

connecting to bbs.archlinux.org...

which took probably 20 - 30 seconds before anything at all happened and which are ongoing. This may be addressed by new WAP, and or further tweaking of WAN/LAN network routing.

I happen to know that my current WAP (being replaced on Weds) already stated in the backend config that you can't use WPA2 AND WPS together... And from previous Linux distros I'd figured out that I have to set the encryption used with WPA2 to "auto" because the default TKIP sometimes plays havoc. Daft really because most of those boxes run on modified Linux.

I've included a logfile because you can see there's a lot of repeat activity going on! (ignore the MPD stuff, I haven't finished configuring that yet). Connection is now stable insofar as it doesn't physically drop, and pacman working fine.

Re: Network routing: trying to troubleshoot random slowdown of traffic

If the connection turns out to be reliable because of the kernel parameters, you want to narrow them down to the critical one(s)
1st off allow HW encryption. If the connection is still reliable, re-enable "ips" and set "swlps=1" and "fwlps=0". If things are still reliable, try to re-enable aspm as well.
