I have a new Brother printer model HL-L3290CDW. There are no packages for it in AUR (which was surprising to me, given how comprehensive AUR is). The closest one is for HL-L2340DW which does not seem to do the job. After installing this package and restarting the cups, when I connect the printer using USB, I still get the message that the driver is required.
There are deb and rpm packages and an installer on Brother's website: [https://support.brother.com/g/b/product … 3290cdw_us]
I use the installer to install drivers for both the printer and the scanner. I get the error
"Rpm or dpkg is required."
Could you please help me figure it out?

If there really is no AUR package, pick the closest to your model, and edit the PKGBUILD to use the correct tarfile from the Brother website.
The wiki has pages on creating PKGBUILDs, it is very straightforward and there is nothing tricky with printer drivers.

I have spent some time trying to fix the PKGBUILD from another version. There seem to be differences between the files in setups and there are things about the signature of the package that I don't quite know how to update.
This is very frustrating... I wish someone would produce an AUR package for this printer. I shouldn't need to learn to build a package and spend hours to set up a printer.

I shouldn't need to learn to build a package and spend hours to set up a printer.
If your attitiude is that someone else should do it for you, install a distro that does that. Arch is for self-sufficient users.

... with that logic, you can ask a user to write their own GPU driver or compile their kernels. I draw the line where I need to spend more than an hour installing a printer.
I'm perfectly fine with learning, but you have the draw the line somewhere.

Spare me your histrionics. That does not follow at all.
I'm objecting to the whining, entitled tone, which is something that is actively discouraged here.
You don't want to learn how to write a simple PKGBUILD: fine, your choice. But don't moan about how you, or anyone else, shouldn't have to do it. Every single contribution in the AUR and the official repos was written by someone who actively wanted to contribute, not just moan about what wasn't there.

https://download.brother.com/welcome/dl … 0.i386.rpm looks like it has the contents Brother used to place in the cupswrapper package.

Thanks, I put the pointer for this in the PKGBUILD. There are two links that I need to replace tho. There is also this one:
http://www.brother.com/pub/bsc/linux/dl … l.i386.rpm in the version that I'm replacing. What would be the replacement for this file?
Also, I think I need to need to install the scanner separately. Is there a way to have rpm or dpkg working on arch? that would make the installer that takes care of everything work.

https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/debtap/ might work.
Edit:
PKGBUILD needs lots of work but files may be in the might so can allow functionality testing

Some have reported success doing it this way. Apparently the AUR converts dpkg to pacman.
Brother has a installation script that downloads and installs the proper printer and scanner drivers:
http://download.brother.com/welcome/dlf … 2.2.0-1.gz 18
First, install cups, cups-filters, ghostscript, gsfonts, foomatic-filters and a2ps for printer support.
Second, install sane for scanner support.
Third, install from the AUR either dpkg or rpm-org, I prefer to use the latter.
Forth, extract the file from it’s gziped archive and mark it executable.
Last, run the script from the command line and follow the instructions.
NOTE: This works for all Linux compatible Brother printer models.
Apparently they are referring to this AUR:

Scanner drivers looks to be brscan4.

Thanks. It does add the printer but I get errors that seem to be because the script is not written for Arch:

What about the PKGBUILD I provided in post #9 or testing the scanner with brscan4 from post #11?
Also please post commands and their outputs in code tags.

Both the scanner and printer work now, so I'm skipping the PKGBUILD option. The script also installed brscan4 that you mentioned.
The printer seems to be working fine despite those errors, so I think a safe bet is to use the script even tho it throws these errors. Maybe it needed to install packages that I had already installed.

As you are now using multiple package managers on the system see Pacman#%22Failed_to_commit_transaction_(conflicting_files)%22_error.

Yes, I suppose I have to deal with this possibility of conflict later. I did install dpkg and rpm-org.
