After doing a full system update( from 4.7 to 5.2), when I press the power button(which is set up to hibernate) or run 'systemctl hibernate' the computer just shuts down and doesn't hibernate. I also think their is a power cycle as my mouse light turns off then on and off again. Any help would be appreciated. Also, before the upgrade hibernate was working fine and the swap partition is still their but I am unsure if it is detected by arch.

Isn't 4.7 from like 3 years ago? That's a long time.. oof.
Please give some context for us to work with:
grep -v '^$\|^\s*\#' /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
grep -v '^$\|^\s*\#' /etc/systemd/sleep.conf
journalctl -b
systemctl list-unit-files --state=enabledOffline
grep -v '^$\|^\s*\#' /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
gives: "MODULES=() BINARIES=() FILES=() HOOKS=(base udev autodetect modconf block filesystems keyboard fsck)"
Running mkinitcpio -L shows that the resume hook is available but it doesn't seem to be loaded
grep -v '^$\|^\s*\#' /etc/systemd/sleep.conf
gives: "[Sleep]"
journalctl -b
gives: a lot of text but nothing about hibernate, sleep or shut down
systemctl list-unit-files --state=enabled
gives: bluetooth services, sshd, virtlockd and virtlogd, vmware tools, getty, network manager and remote-fs
Also, if 4.7 was 3 years ago, it wasn't 4.7 as I installed arch a couple months ago
Furthermore, running swapon shows my swap partition

Do not post interpretations of output, but the actual output.
There's no resume hook in your mkinitcpio, ie. there is no way *hibernation* (S4, not S3, suspend to RAM) can have ever worked on that system.
Approaches for hibernation, sleeps (though not asked for by Swiggles) etc. would only be found in the previous journal, so please post the outputs of
sudo journalctl -b
sudo journalctl -b -1Also your pacman log so we can see what was actually updated when.

Hibernation has worked before but something must have changed after the update. As the resume hook is an option from 'mkinitcpio -L' is there a way to add it to mkinitcpio.conf. Also, the full output of the last two commands are at https://pastebin.com/RcNNrV1M (systemctl list-unit-files --state=enabled) and https://pastebin.com/SgXp2MHB (sudo journalctl -b) and https://pastebin.com/E7yU8xFL (sudo journalctl -b -1) and my pacman log is at https://pastebin.com/Zv1Bu3ik
As you said by hibernate never working, one way I am sure is I setup a swap partition and the fans in my computer turned off when it hibernated

I read the page and resume needs to be set. I'm using grub and read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … eters#GRUB from that I think that I need to edit /etc/default/grub and append GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT but do I just append it with resume=/dev/sda3 (which is my swap partition)? And then run 'grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg'

Unfortunately, that didnt work. I'm not too sure if I put the kernel parameter wrong or what. But would adding the resume hook to mkinitcpio help? If so how do you do that. I have tried mkinitcpio -A resume but it says a -g option is needed and I don't know how to use that

How did you install your system?
It is right there in the wiki @Seth provided.

My bad, I was checking over the config and something has definitely changed since the update. But I realized that I had typed sda3 instead of sda2. I apologize for that mistake but everything is working now. Thank you very much for your help
