[Solved] Budgie & GNOME Desktop Won't Start

[ Originally titled Budgie and GNOME Desktop Won't Start ("Something has gone wrong") ]

Hey there, for some reason suddenly Budgie Desktop, my usual desktop, and GNOME desktop won't start. I get a full screen error that says something to the effect of "something has gone wrong". I've checked journalctl and it appears to have something to do with systemd but it's unclear to me what's going on.

$ journalctl -b:

I've looked up some of this, but I'm not getting anything that stands out or seems to be the solution. I'm currently using the NVIDIA proprietary drivers, and am still capable of starting Openbox, so I think it's a GNOME Shell specific issue.

Thanks!

Thanks!

Unfortunately while that fix works for gnome-session, it doesn't seem to work for budgie-desktop. I'll check the logs again later - maybe budgie needs to be updated or something.

Re: [Solved] Budgie & GNOME Desktop Won't Start

Hi!

I have the same issue here.
May I ask how do you start the Budgie desktop? I use LightDM as the display manager and login manager. For me, Gnome previously didn't even load (threw me back to the login screen) but never cared as I didn't intend to use it. Now, all options (Budgie, Gnome and Gnome on XOrg) gives me the same white screen with the sad face that "something went wrong". The symptoms match what OP had trouble with, and unfortunately I didn't manage to translate the fix from the other thread to my case.

Re: [Solved] Budgie & GNOME Desktop Won't Start

So the .xinitrc refers to a file located in your home directory? I will try this on my budgie and see if it works.

Recommending using full paths on where to put things so users know what you mean.

How did you install Arch (what guide or instructions did you follow)?

Re: [Solved] Budgie & GNOME Desktop Won't Start

Is there a more permanent way to fix this issue so that login managers can be used again?

Though that being said, this fix doesn't seem to work for Budgie Desktop (the XDG_SESSION_TYPE=X11 fix).

I installed using the official one listed here in this website and budgie and gnome 3 based desktops worked fine until the last update a couple days ago. After that you get a uh oh something went wrong. I can use cinnamon, xfce, gnome classic, and gnome on xorg. Budgie and Gnome 3 fail.

Re: [Solved] Budgie & GNOME Desktop Won't Start

Not knowing something as rudimentary as how .xinitrc works, or where it is located, suggests otherwise.

A full path is not necessary as every Arch user should understand how to start X, whether they need to or not.

Have never used one on any of the linux distros I've used over the last 20 years.

Please let's stick to the topic.

Though that being said, this fix doesn't seem to work for Budgie Desktop (the XDG_SESSION_TYPE=X11 fix).

There is a bug reported to the Arch maintianers:
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/63849?p … ie-desktop

In the meantime, I just used the Arch Linux Archive to reset my system to a previous date of 2019-09-15.

I tried to check upstream, but seems like the Budgie developers (the Solus team) didn't yet move to 3.34, but I can't find their official package list, I am saying this based on their forums.

Edit: I have got some answers from upstream here:

JoshStrobl wrote:

These were moved out of GSD in 3.33.90+ and Budgie is already patched to not require those: https://github.com/solus-project/budgie … .build#L57 Furthermore, gnome-session was already updated to reflect the GSD changes.

Not to mention we don't actually need those, we never utilize them in Budgie.

Re: [Solved] Budgie & GNOME Desktop Won't Start

I use Budgie desktop, and use GDM for log in (i use X11, not wayland), above "export XDG_SESSION_TYPE=x11"  hack not work for me.
i add above export into both  ~/.profile and ~/.xinitrc, nu luck.

i paste my journal log too,  if needed, please see my post. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 0#p1865080

Edit:

i downgrade pamcan repo to 2019-09-15 too,  it worked now.

I am waiting arch push new version budgie to fix this.

thank you.

Re: [Solved] Budgie & GNOME Desktop Won't Start

Just a quick heads-up.
On the bug report of the budgie-desktop (vote on the bug report if you're affected), someone commented that they have no problem using budgie-desktop-git from the AUR.
I reset the original mirrorlist instead of the archive one, removed budgie-desktop and budgie-desktop-extras, then installed budgie-desktop-git (with git clone and makepkg -si), then reinstalled the budgie-desktop-extras and recompiled the budgie-screensaver package. As of now, the desktop works fine (there is some weirdness with how the system tray looks, but I guess that's minor).

My current Budgie version for the record:

Name : budgie-desktop-git
Version : 10.5.r33.g3a507d3b-1
Description : Simple GTK3 desktop experience

                  gnome-screensaver: Lock screen
                  network-manager-applet: Network management [installed]
Required By : budgie-extras
Optional For : None
Conflicts With : budgie-desktop
Replaces : None
Installed Size : 4,55 MiB
Packager : Unknown Packager

Install Date : 2019. szept. 24., kedd, 22:41:11 KST

While the package in the community repo gets sorted out, this can also be an option for those who want to keep their system up to date.
