I am randomly facing the issue that when I hold down the middle mouse button to use the trackpoint for scrolling, the laptop keeps scrolling even though I stop holding the middle mouse button. This behavior stops when I press left-click, right-click or middle-click.
Further information:
The issue occurs in random intervals. It is most noticeable when scrolling in Firefox but it has also happened to me in Nautilus. I am also not certain if this is limited to the middle click as I might have noticed it happening with the left click aswell. To handle input events I am using libinput on Gnome where the issue occurs in the Wayland and Xorg session. Also, I have disabled the touchpad in Gnome settings and added a device quirk that scales the trackpoint sensitivity to 25% so that I can use my external mouse and trackpoint even though Gnome only allows one sensitivity setting.
From a hardware perspective, the device is a ThinkPad T450 that I got used in February. The device has a dent in a corner and the touchpad has minor indentations on one side from it's previous owner. The trackpoint buttons feel reasonably stiff to the touch but not brand new.
Is there any way for me to find out if this is a hardware or a software issue? The only thing that comes to mind that I could try to change out is the driver from libinput to the deprecated synaptics driver.
Any ideas as to why that issue occurs would also be greatly appreciated.

According to at least two threads over the last year on r/Thinkpad this seems to be a Gnome issue.
Still any input is of course appreciated!
