Hey there!
I have libpng12, libpng14 and libpng16 on my system and more and more frequently I run into issues with this. For example when building software.
libpng warning: Application was compiled with png.h from libpng-1.6.37
libpng warning: Application is running with png.c from libpng-1.4.22
libpng warning: Incompatible libpng version in application and libraryThis is just one example, where I'd get warnings when building Blender. Another time I couldn't install https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/djv because I had some files from libpng14 in /usr/local/include/ (it worked after temporarily removing these files, but DJV now can't play png sequences.)
So, this seems like a bit of a mess. >>> How can I restore order?
Is it safe to use pacman to remove all versions and only reinstall the libpng package? (which is v 16)
Do I need to keep older versions?
What are all the locations where shared libraries should reside on a system?
This is where I could find libpng files so far:
/usr/include/libpng1[2/4/6]/ (header files)
/usr/lib/ (all versions)
/usr/lib32/ (versions 12 and 16)
/usr/lib64/ (all versions)
/usr/local/include (only 14) (this seems wrong! (?))
It would be really great if I could get some help with this. More generally, I'd like to understand the logic behind all this. (Where do applications search for shared libraries by default?)
Thank you for reading! ![]()

There are no archlinux packages that install stuff in /usr/local .
You probably installed libpng 14 outside of pacman, maybe through a direct download and running an install as root.
output of pacman -Qs libpng ?
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Remove that self compiled libpng and use the AUR package if need be.
As for understanding the underlying logic read the man pages of ld.so and ldconfig

I removed everything *14 and was now able to install djv from AUR with png support.
Thanks for the tips! I'll read up on ld.so and ldconfig.
