Gnome Shell fails to launch network places: Operation not supported

With, for example, the Places Menu extension installed, local directory places work, but any network locations (SMB) or the Network place itself popup a shell error "Failed to Launch "[item-name]" Operation not supported", where [item-name] is the name of the place item in the menu.

Nautilus still navigates network locations fine.

Not sure if this is a configuration issue? I don't really see any others reporting this.
