[SOLVED] Empty TTY on Xorg start after installing Nvidia

Greetings to everyone,

I'm in trouble with my new arch installation when i install nvidia driver my Xorg is unable to display anything. It look like it is running (because we see i3bar related errors) but the only thing i got is an empty TTY with a white underscore.
It's driving me mad because i had the probleme on my previous install and i found how to solve it and i don't remember how.

Some informations about my GPU:

$ nvidia-xconfig --query-gpu-info
Number of GPUs: 1

GPU #0:
  Name      : GeForce GTX 960M
  UUID      : GPU-5da14e88-0681-932d-fffd-1573632d18a3
  PCI BusID : PCI:1:0:0

  Number of Display Devices: 0

After installing nvidia drivers i ran mkinitcpio to regenerate initframs

$ sudo mkinitcpio -p linux

I also generated xconfig with:

$ sudo nvidia-xconfig

i modified tohis file to:

$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig:  version 435.21

EndSection

Section "Device"

So, here is my Xorg output (https://pastebin.com/ECHaV57k):

Accordingly to some solution on the wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … leshooting) i have the following files related to nvidia:

$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
install i915 /usr/bin/false
install intel_agp /usr/bin/false

I also tried to set grub mode to console.

I usualy run Lighdm but even when using xinit or startx as standalone i have no graphical output. I tried to modify my .xinitr file accordingly to This archlinux forum thread but it didn't worked:

$ cat .xinitrc
#!/bin/sh

# Make sure this is before the 'exec' command or it won't be sourced.
xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
xrandr --auto

[ -f /etc/xprofile ] && . /etc/xprofile
[ -f ~/.xprofile ] && . ~/.xprofile

if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
        for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/?*.sh ; do
                [-x "$f" ] && . "$f"
        done
        unset f
fi

exec i3

I already to make this work few monthes ago and i had the same problems but i have the need to run opencl often wich is not supported by nouveau driver.

Thannks for your help guys.

$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf

# nvidia-xconfig:  version 435.21

Re: [SOLVED] Empty TTY on Xorg start after installing Nvidia

Are you using bios or efi boot?

you may need to set a boot resolution that matches your monitor's native resolution, for example "console-mode max" in systemd-boot or " or gfxpayload=1920x1080" in grub.
That often works around blank tty issues on nvidia.

Re: [SOLVED] Empty TTY on Xorg start after installing Nvidia

I'm using an EFI Boot. I changed the gfx payload (see bellow) but nothing changed

So i modified my /etc/default/grub to:

cat /etc/default/grub
# GRUB boot loader configuration

# ...

# Uncomment to allow the kernel use the same resolution used by grub
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=1920x1080
# previous: keep

# ...

GRUB_GFXMODE=1920x1080
$ sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
Generating grub configuration file ...

Re: [SOLVED] Empty TTY on Xorg start after installing Nvidia

Remove that xorg.conf. The display_setup.sh should be sufficient, given that there's no conflicting xorg.conf present. And the intel module blacklist. Optimus works by relaying your image over the intel graphics card, the modules MUST be present and loaded. You should ignore the nvidia article and only follow the optimus article, the first sentence in the nvidia article tells you this.
