acpi broken after system upgrade (from linux 5.3.4 to 5.3.7)

Since last system update, `acpi -t` hangs forever (cannot even be SIGKILL'ed).

In dmesg there are messages such as "int3402 thermal: probe of INT3402:00 failed with error -22".

Any advice on how to fix this?

Full dmesg ( http://ix.io/1ZpG ):

Re: acpi broken after system upgrade (from linux 5.3.4 to 5.3.7)

So apparently I failed to identify the real problem in my original description.

The reason of acpi being hosed (other than acpi -t and other things visible in the posted logs I was also unable to suspend/hibernate etc.) was probably "[ALPM] error: problem occurred while upgrading filesystem", i.e. the "filesystem" package failing to update properly due to 3rd party package manpages being installed in /usr/local/share/man/. Removing those, reinstalling filesystem and rebooting fixed the issue. The "error -22" etc. are still there but seem to be benign.

In fact my second hypothesis doesn't hold, either. The problem is back, only not immediately after reboot. Investigation continues...

Great dmesg, I really enjoyed it... it's like looking at one of my ivy bridge / PCH things I have lying around the house. Or the one I'm typing on now. Sadly, mine all appear to be even older and inferior to your hardware. Except for the part about not starting up... they usually do that. Sorry kt's been a long night I'm afraid I'm not being much help.

No, I think that's probably very much part of the central issue. I'm just guessing here though. There's some sort of irq conflict, driver issue, race condition, that's causing a fan or sensor or whatever your thermal error is I didn't look up to grind everything to a halt and then your gfx card crashes. I could be remembering this all wrong though it's been a long night. I think I said that. I'd start with i915.modeset=1 i915.fastboot=1 to the cmdline (you can maybe try fbc too but that ones really not likely to help) and add i915 as the first module to your mkinitcpio.conf. get rid of xf86-intel if you have it installed. Maybe play around with lm_sensors and whatever module parameters in that area are available. acpi=noirq would be another to try. oh and acpi_enforce_resources=lax

Hope that helps a little. I look forward to reading the next chapter. I really shouldn't have spent an hour writing so little... but I got caught up in the story. That 306A9 microcode is a real winner too. Really ties the story together.

Design is a funny word. Some people think design means how it looks. But, of course, if you dig deeper, it’s how it really works. You have to grok what it is all about.

Re: acpi broken after system upgrade (from linux 5.3.4 to 5.3.7)

Hey cfeedback, thanks for the input, I appreciate it.

Thing is, I've actually had "int3403 thermal: probe of INT3403:00 failed with error -22" in dmesg ever since I installed Arch on this machine (linux 4.13.8), but hadn't noticed any issues until now. (EDIT: the old 4.13.8 dmesg is here: https://gist.github.com/stepnem/96baf6c … cf6f62e4df )

Also, why do you think the problem is gfx related? If the graphics card crashed, wouldn't there be any visible effects? In my case, everything continues to work "fine", barred the acpi functionality like querying the thermal sensors (battery/acpi -i actually seemed to continue working) and suspend/hibernate.

I'm wary of using acpi_enforce_resources=lax, from what I understood it could do more damage than good.

I guess for the time being I'll try if linux-lts works OK for me and will continue trying future mainline kernel updates.

Re: acpi broken after system upgrade (from linux 5.3.4 to 5.3.7)

Current linux-lts (4.19.80) has the same problem as 5.3.7 for me, so I'm back to 5.3.4.

Re: acpi broken after system upgrade (from linux 5.3.4 to 5.3.7)

Have you tried linux-mainline 5.4-rc4 to see if the issue has already been fixed upstream?

Thanks for the suggestion, but at this point I feel I have too little information and understanding of the issue to warrant compiling a kernel as opposed to just waiting for a release and hoping the issue disappears as magically as it appeared. I.e., if I found out 5.4-rc works, that'd be great, but I can just wait for the release alright. If, on the other hand, I find out 5.4-rc doesn't work, how can I actually help them fixing the issue? Do you think the information I give above is enough for an upstream bug report?
