Hi guys,
I'm running a compaq nx7010 with an ATI mobility Radeon 9200
I've installed arch 0.7.2 base
updated the system (pacman -Su)
installed xorg (pacman -S xorg)
installed the ATI propriotory driver (pacman -S ati-fglrx)
modified xorg.conf adding a ModeLine file (screen fizzes out without this)
This config has worked in the past (before updating the system). However, xorg now refuses to load. The following is a tail of my Xorg.0.log:
AIGLX error: dlsym for __driCreateNewScreen_20050727 failed (/usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri/atiogl_a_dri.so: undefined symbol: __ driCreateNewScreen_20050727)
AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc: line 28 twm: command not found
Same for rest of commands in xinitrc ...
FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/fonts/misc" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.
Any assistance will be most appreciated

As far as I know, the current ATI binary driver doesn't work with AIGLX enabled. Try disabling it.

also - create a .xinitrc file in your home directory, and add the window manager you want to run to it, like
exec startxfce4
or whatever.
plus, ensure ati-fglrx-utils is installed.

However, ati-frlrx-utils is installed. My ~/.xinitrc contains "exec startfluxbox"
I deleted my ~/.xinitrc file previously as to simplify my post. With my .xinitrc in place this is what I get:

can you post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log to a pastebin site and link it here please? That would help.

I will try to post the files. I'm experiencing a peculiar network issue as well. After upgrading, connectivity on port 80 and 21 is only possible from my office. I've got no connectivity neither at home nor at my parents' home (In both cases, Internet access is set up with an identical DSL modem configed as a router with all boxes connected to a 100Mb ethernet switch). I'm able to ping using DNS names- so it ain't a name resolution or basic connectivity problem. All windows boxes have no problems accessing the internet whatsoever. Due to all these issues, I'm afraid I will b forced to revert back to using Windows XP. I really can't afford to spend all this time setting up my work computer (I need to work...). I really want to give Linux a shot and Arch seems like the perfect distribution for me (I tried Gentoo - compiling time sucks... Tried NLD - Heavier than XP - too much crap installed by default).
In any case, your help is most appreciated.

Hoora for out of the box Kernel USB drive support (although I was looking forward to setting this up myself.)
As per your request, here are both files:
Xorg.0.log - http://www.copypot.com/687
xorg.conf - http://www.copypot.com/688
Once again, many thanks for your assistance

Okay, I'm seeing no real reason why X wouldn't be starting for you. So, I'll take shots in the dark here...
First, make sure xorg-clients is installed. I didn't see it mentioned above and I'm pretty sure it's got some important stuff in it.
Then, from your log:
(WW) `fonts.dir' not found (or not valid) in "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi".
Entry deleted from font path.
(Run 'mkfontdir' on "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi").
(WW) `fonts.dir' not found (or not valid) in "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi".
Entry deleted from font path.
(Run 'mkfontdir' on "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi").
Try running mkfontdir on those two directories to fix up any font problems.
The AIGLX error happens for me too, but X starts fine.
You could also try installing xorg-twm then using the default xinitrc (like you did earlier) and see if it's a problem with flux.

I ran mkfontdir on both directories. Doing this cleaned up the 2 related warning messages. However it did not solve the problem.
As for xorg-clients, indeed the package is not installed. Due to my above crazy network issue, I can't install (as pacman uses FTP) at home and will have to wait either until I'm at the office or if I somehow manage to overcome the problem (I'll post in the relevant forum...)
Thanks again,

Installing xorg-clients did not resolve the problem. twm does not run as well.
Looks like I'm going back to good old Windows XP...

In .xinitrc I never use "startfluxbox", only "exec fluxbox", never fails me. Probably not your problem, but worth a shot.

Problem solved!!!
pacman -S xorg did not install the font packages. After installing xorg-fonts-100dpi, xorg-fonts75dpi, xorg-type1 all is well.
Thanks for all your help,
