[SOLVED] No DM. X server init broke. Logs point to permissions.

I have an issue with starting my X server. I hadn’t used a DM, and X (and i3) had worked well for over a year. Then one day X failed to init at login. The full log is below, but the line I believed to be most important was:

To try and isolate the issue I logged in as root, changed .bash_profile to .bash_profile.bu, relogged in as trent (me) and ran

sudo bash .bash_profile.bu 

and it worked. It uses all root configs (so no real configs as far as user trent is concerned) so I backed up the systemwide xinitrc and added

exec i3

to the end of that file to have a workable system although everything is running as root.


So, the combination of permissions related error messages in Xorg.0.log and the result of the above test led me to believe it was some permissions issue.

I read in the Arch wiki about a solution to permissions from about 2014 where the solution is to run Xorg is user mode by using a “legacy” Xorg package and running it in a wrapper. Since I used to run it not as root with no problems, the fact that workaround is 5 years old, and the fact that it doesn’t sound like a root cause solution led me to wonder if that was worth trying. Do most people run X in root or user mode?

I do not understand the cause of the issue. Unfortunately this first occurred about a month ago and I could not afford to go digging into it at the time, so I am unsure what exactly triggered this issue. At the time I installed lightdm and the issue went away with its (assuming) different initialization process. I do not understand how DM’s work under the hood, and I’d prefer to startx with my scripts. Its mostly an educational exercise.

I know my script initialization process and I know that its a permissions issue. Where should I look next to find the next clue?

As a workaround you can enable early KMS.
The issue was introduced with systemd 243 but I am not aware of anyone affected reporting it upstream.
