Greetings, in advance I'd like to apologize for the wall of text.Those that survive please read on.
I've been attempting to bash my new Proxmox system into using an Arch VM as a gpu passthrough. (I have been using it this way on my old system for several years.) However, I'm stuck and am hoping for some configuration help here. I had originally posted this a couple of days ago on /r archlinux but have only had someone else reply with the same issue. So the post below is a few days worth of testing.

Supermicro X10SRM-F
64GB Ram
rx580 gpu
I'm running Proxmox 5.4. When I tried with Proxmox 6 every time I tested the passthrough I'd get a hard lockup of the whole system. I had a perfectly working arch setup on my old 5.4 so I'm going with tried and true.
I've installed and successfully passed through my rx580 to my Arch VM. If I do not set a desktop environment and set the VGA Display in Proxmox to 'None", I successfully boot on my monitor to a tty screen. However, if I attempt to starx (Plasma desktop) it fails with the following error:

[ 93.752] (EE) Server terminated with error (1). Closing log file.If I try to start sddm, I get a blinking cursor on the top left of the screen. I can still start other tty sessions. I have an .xinitrc that's only been modded to 'exec startplasma-X11'. If I instead boot the VM up with a virtio screen, my main monitor isn't used, but the virtual screen works perfectly with either sddm enabled or startx.
I do not have anything in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ folder either. I think I just need to tell the system to use the gpu with the bloody monitor and am at a loss how to go about identifying it and doing that. (Booting into the virtual, has no other displays shown besides the virtual one in system settings.)
Any help would be much appreciated. I've absorbed so much more linux than I've learned over the last few years but it's all a bloody fog in my head at the moment from over-saturation.

Using 'xrandr' will only show the virtual display. Booting to monitor 'xrandr' I get "Can't open display".
However, it does see the ports. Because when I check with:

versionOkay, some frustrating progress. After several reboots today I actually managed to get to the desktop! It was working perfectly. However, after about 15min it hard crashed and forced my whole system to reboot.
Since then, I've not been able to get back into it. It's very strange and I'll try to describe the symptoms. Once Arch starts to boot, it eventually displays something akin to:

/dev/sda2: clean, xxxxx/xxxxxx files, xxxxxx/xxxxxx blocksImmediately under that is a blinking cursor. Now, 3 possible things happen here.
1) The screen clears and I am presented with a login prompt. Attempting to startx or sddm here fails as above.
2) The system appears locked. The above 'Starting version' text remains, but instead of clearing and going to the prompt screen, I get a multi-colour one pixel line about a cm from the bottom of the screen. I can't login here, and attempting a new tty fails.
3) This is where the magic happened. On my one successful boot, I got the login prompt screen, however there was a band of multi-colour lines across the bottom of the screen about 3 cm thick. The login worked though, and using 'starx' from here brought me to the desktop!
Since then, I've been able to reproduce 1 & 2, but not 3. Even after a dozen reboots. I'm stuck but perhaps it's some kind of timing issue?
Edit: Once I get back in I'll try to copy the logs out of the system. I've got them saved locally on the system atm.
EditEdit: I should mention that using a Win10 VM, the card passes through without issue and works perfect and is stable. So frustrating!
