[SOLVED]Black/Flickering screen while playing dota2

Hello guys, having a weird issue with , looks like dota2 only.
my screen randomly goes black for a few seconds, sometimes its 2sec, sometimes its 10 , doesnt look like anything i do while playing triggers it to go black, seems completely random.

weird thing is it happens only when i play online/multiplayer, if i play with bots it doesnt happen at all , looks like more i play more times it happens.
if i switch to another desktop while having a black screen in dota and go back to the desktop where dota is running its fixed, but ofc it keeps happening later on

im running arch linux with i3wm

last night i was changing resolution using xrandr gui  version (arandr) cause i had a second monitor hooked up, dont know it that had anything to do with this. problem started this morning.

EDIT:

i recorded a short video of the issue, more u play(in this case im watching live game) more offten it happens and longer it lasts. as u can see switching between workspaces makes it reappear again , but for a short period.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYhsf8IWFm4

EDIT 2: blackouts happened on main manu page as well

Re: [SOLVED]Black/Flickering screen while playing dota2

what kind of system is this? model?

i look up MCP61 and it shows a gpu but your lspci outputs shows everything but an nvidia vga device, do you have the nvidia gpu disabled and your only using the amd gpu?

is this a new problem or has it always done this?

post outputs:

glxinfo | grep -i vendor
hwinfo --gfxcard
xrandr --prop

Its an older PC
I only have one gpu and its AMD, AMD radeon hd 6570 2gb version.
No idea whats up with the nvidia thing, as far as i can remember i didnt install anything nvidia related.
its a new problem, first time happening now, i noticed its not only happening in dota , it happens in another steam game as well(magicka2) but way shorter and not as offten.
i googled nvidia mcpi61 just now as well , looks like thats my motherboard.
Motherboard is K9N6PGM2-V, if that helps

Re: [SOLVED]Black/Flickering screen while playing dota2

It's an nforce chip (the boards north and south bridge)
Try passing

radeon.audio=0 radeon.dpm=0 radeon.aspm=0 radeon.runpm=0 radeon.bapm=0

to the kernel and see whether the issue remains (this disables hdmi audio and power saving features of the chip)

happens only when i play online/multiplayer, if i play with bots it doesnt happen at all

This is hyper-weird, and the issue is also limited to that particular game (and doesn't happen w/ eg. warsow or xonotic or <any other GL game here>)?
If the blackout lasts longer: does the output (Tv, monitor) suspend (typically indicated by the bezel LED, try "xset force dpms off")?

Do you also run a compositor next to i3wm? (like compton, xcompmgr etc.)

Im not really familiar with kernels, do i do this in grub menu by pressing e and adding it to the end of the kernel line?

I should've edited my first post, ill do that now.

at first it seemed like its happening only online, since i played one 40 min game with bots after a reboot (to see if its fixed so i dont get banned for being afk on a ranked match), and didnt happen at all. just yesterday it happened at the main menu screen right after i started the game.

i think it happened 2 times while i was playing "Magicka 2 " , but im not sure cause it is not as long as in dota, it just blinked black , very short. maybe thats just the game and got nothing to do with this.

my monitor doesnt suspend(turn off) at all , it just gives me black screen , but its still on.

no i dont have any compositors running, have compton installed, but not running(last time i used it was prolly a year ago)

did i misstype (i think i didnt i double checked before booting) or my pc just doesnt like these settings?

Re: [SOLVED]Black/Flickering screen while playing dota2

Does this mean it now happens all the time?
The GPU doesn't seem to be prone to end up being underpowered.

Is this a new problem (regression)? Did you try the lts kernel?

Re: [SOLVED]Black/Flickering screen while playing dota2

thats quite the light show, you can see if maybe load detection is causing the display to blank when it's not suppose to

xrandr --output VGA-0 --set "load detection" 0

this may also just turn the display off, i've never used the option before but you have it listed on your xrandr output, it's not persistent either way.

did you try what seth suggested before about dpms?

xset force dpms off

No i didnt try lts kernel, i usually dont want to mess with kernel on my own(i had a bad experience with doing anything kernel related few years back, not on arch linux tho) I'll read about it on arch wiki and try.

if u mean about flashing screen from the last video, yeah, its new. happened after i rebooted with the new kernel options. but reboot fixed it as well since i just edited it in grub, so its not really a problem.

and if u think about dota blackouts , its new, dota has been running fine on my linux machine for the last 4 years or more, dota had no update before issue happened, but arch kernel did , so that might be the reason for this.

thats quite the light show, you can see if maybe load detection is causing the display to blank when it's not suppose to

xrandr --output VGA-0 --set "load detection" 0

this may also just turn the display off, i've never used the option before but you have it listed on your xrandr output, it's not persistent either way.

did you try what seth suggested before about dpms?

xset force dpms off

i didnt try "xset force dpms off" ill try it now, thanks for reminding i skipped it

will try the fist command u gave me as well if xset doesnt fix it.

ill run dota2 now , and hang there for next 30 mins or so, and will let you guys now whats happening.

Edit: xset dpms force off just turns my monitor off until i move my mouse

xrandr --output VGA-0 --set "load detection" 0  didnt give any output

it wouldnt produce output, if you look at xrandr --prop for VGA-0 it should now say  "load detection: 0"

edit: just noticed i gave you "xset force dpms off" instead of "xset dpms force off", anyway to disable dpms its

xset -dpms

Re: [SOLVED]Black/Flickering screen while playing dota2

You won't have to "mess" with the kernel, just install the LTS kernel and select it in your bootmanager.
I meant whether the dota-related issue is "new" and since it is, either your HW broke or there's a regression in the GPU driver stack. The lts kernel will hopefully indicate whether it's in the kernel part. If not: are you using xf86-vide-ati? (check your xorg log in doubt)

Re: [SOLVED]Black/Flickering screen while playing dota2

okay guys, i was playing for around 30 mins now , since i dont have much time atm and it seems like its fixed (should've gone black by now from my previous experience)
as far as i know this command fixed it

xrandr --output VGA-0 --set "load detection" 0

even tho i have no idea what that did or what the problem was. as i said on my first post i was using arand (gui xrandr app) before this problem started,  to change resolution for my second monitor ive had connected at the time cause i thought it would be easier for me to set it up with a gui. maybe arandr made "load detection : 1" not sure anymore.
thanks everyone for helping me deal with this , i hope its actually fixed.

i'd like to keep this topic open for another day or 2 if possible just to be sure its working as it should

@seth Im not sure, i have both installed(thats prolly a problem as well.)
cant find xf86-video-ati nor xf86-video-amdgpu in my xorg log file.

this is a log from ~/.local/share/xorg
