Long-time user, first-time poster here, a testament to how helpful this community is!
Recently, I replaced my AMD card with a GTX-1660Ti, and shifted my drivers to nvidia proprietary (64 and 32-bit), might be relevant. Some time after that, Steam stopped working properly. When launched, via native or runtime, it simply goes to background. Not shown in the navbar or in ALT-TAB or anything, but the processes are running. I can start games via the command line, and for some reason Big Picture Mode works, but that's an inelegant solution, and doesn't provide the same functionality. Also, games are now running incredibly slowly. Ark is basically unplayable, and CounterStrike Source is very very slow. For comparison from 2004, Xonotic works flawlessly.
Arch is up to date, and it's an i5-7600K with that 1660, feel like these games should be fine? GNOME is my WM/DM, but for reference, if I go to another tty, start an X session and try from there, get the same indications. No Steam UI, games are unplayably slow.
