I'm trying to use/start audacity, but when I start the program I get an error about not being able to initialize the audio I/O layer. When I open the preferences and check the Audio I/O settings, it doesn't show any audio devices to choose. I am able to use sound everywhere else in the system, however. How can I fix this?

Oh, do you use KDE? Do you have the Sound System turned on? If so, turn it off in the control centre. Running sound servers usually blocks audacity from using the sound card.
