I am using startx to launch emacs:
emacs --daemon -f exwm-enable
exec emacsclient -c After a system upgrade yesterday, I couldn't launch startx anymore (black screen).
I have downloaded gnome. My xinitrc is just laucnhing gnome-session. Starx randomly fails to start (90 % of the time. I need to relaunch startx until it eventually works).
I did enable early KMS start (as advised in https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … #p1874978):
I added i915 to MODULES and regenerate initramfs:
mkinitcpio -p linuxHere is the logfile of Xorg when gnome session fails:

This isn't right. This isn't even wrong.

I am using startx to launch emacs:
My xinitrc is just laucnhing gnome-session.
Which one is it? Post the xinitrc and see the notes in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xinit#xinitrc
The xorg log is shortend (at least the head is missing) but doesn't inidcate any problems, so rather check the journal for crashes in gnome-shell.

Originally, I was launching emacs with the following xinitrc:
emacs --daemon -f exwm-enable
exec emacsclient -c I just tried to launch gnome to investigate if the issue could come from exwm. And I had the same issue with gnome.
here is the full log when launching startx with the following xinitrc:

see the notes in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xinit#xinitrc
There is still no problem w/ the X11 server, but your xinitrc is incomplete.
Offline
From the last Xorg.log
[ 6614.982] (EE) systemd-logind: failed to take device /dev/dri/card0: Operation not permittedhowever it did not prevent X from detecting the screen.
Edit:
If the .xinitrc is only two lines in its entirety please see the second note from xinint.

Thanks for your help!
If the .xinitrc is only two lines in its entirety please see the second note from xinint.
So, now my .xinitrc looks like this:
#! /bin/sh
if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ] ; then
for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/?*.sh ; do
[ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
done
unset f
fi
emacs --daemon -f exwm-enable
exec emacsclient -c And this is the log:

Sorry, it is a typo. I meant:
exec emacsclientOffline
What happens when you execute startx? Also where are you executing pkill in another terminal?

What happens when you execute startx?
Emacs start after 10 seconds... and I have a message in my *Messages* saying that EXWM failed...
Note that I have also the sames issues when launching gnome-session instead of emacs. With gnome, I have a white error screen saying that something went wrong.
Also where are you executing pkill in another terminal?
Yes, from another tty

If you switch the exec line to the following (requires the xterm package)
exec xtermdoes that start a single xterm correctly?
Also what if you remove the package xf86-video-intel so the modesetting driver will be used instead of intel?

A very small white xterm window appears in the left corner. Impossible to type anything. Here is the log:

The window geometry changed and I can actually select the window and start writing in xterm.

Why would xterm start on a minimum window size by default?
Try
#! /bin/sh
if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ] ; then
for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/?*.sh ; do
[ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
done
unset f
fi
exec xtermDid you run "emacs --daemon -f exwm-enable" also when attempting a gnome session?
white error screen saying that something went wrong
Are there maybe more helpful messages in the system journal? (Some process crashes etcetc.)

No, I just launched gnome-session.

When starting emacs-daemon, I don't have any error. Just a warning message saying that a long standing GTK+ bug may cause Emacs to crash.
However when I launch emacsclient, emacs appears but I get the same message in the *Warnings* buffer:
EXWM fails to start (wrong-type-argument: (number-or-marker=p nil))And I can't type anything in the *scratch* buffer. However, the cursor and the touchpad work fine.
EDIT:
It looks like the keyboard isn't working or that emacs does not receive any signals (e.g. M-x) from it.

This is not necessarily the same cause but try the "emacs -Q", debug-on-error, --debug-init stuff.

emacs -Qworks fine. And when I eval my init.el from emacs, everything works fine, except EXWM is not enabled.
when running emacs with debug-on-error on -debug-init arguments, I don't get any warnings or errors.

I've no emacsperience, but guess you want to run
emacs -Q --daemon -f exwm-enableOn a hunch:
what are the outputs of
xrandr -q
xdpyinfo
xwininfo -rootYou can utilize https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pastebin to feed the output directly into a pastebin service.

Without real hope, I did a pacman -Syu and updated all my emacs packages. It does not seem that x nor exwm have been updated... But it works now: I can start emacs daemon and emacsclient without issues. Same with gnome... I am really not sure what happened.
Anyway, thank you very much for your help! What a great community! ![]()
