[SOLVED] how to decide between multiple install candidates?

So I want to use my spiffy tplink 802.11ac adapter which has the rtl8812 chipset..
It doesnt seem to be in the default 5.4.1 kernel im running.. So I look to the AUR and I see

[dirtbag@archlinux ~]$ yay -Ss 8812
aur/rtl8812au422-dkms-git 4.2.2.r7502.gc20130507aur2-1 (+2 1.41%)
rtl8821AU/rtl8812AU/rtl8811AU driver with firmware version 4.2.2 (7502.20130507) (Tested and working as of Linux kernel 5.3.8-arch1-1)
aur/rtl8812au-rpi-dkms-git 0.r68.92875e4-1 (+2 0.00%)
Realtek 802.11n WLAN Adapter Linux driver for rtl8812au (patched for the Raspberry Pi)
aur/rtl8812au-inject-dkms-git r44.2577553-1 (+5 0.00%) (Out-of-date 2018-02-22)
A kernel module for Realtek 8812au network cards with dkms support, with monitor mode and injection support
aur/rtl88xxau-aircrack-dkms-git r854.25c0645-2 (+19 1.96%)
Aircrack-ng kernel module for Realtek 88XXau (USB adapters only) network cards (8811au, 8812au, 8814au and 8821au chipsets) with monitor mode and injection support
aur/rtl8821au-dkms-git 5.1.5.r59.gaf07b27-1 (+46 0.03%)
    rtl8821AU, rtl8812AU and rtl8811AU chipset driver with firmware v5.1.5
aur/rtl8812au-dkms-git 5.6.4.2.r7.g582c046-1 (+57 0.86%)
rtl8812AU chipset driver with firmware v5.6.4.2
[dirtbag@archlinux ~]$

o_O

How do I know which of these silly things to choose? Is there some kind of rule of thumb to use to weed through hwich one is most stable/best to use ?

Re: [SOLVED] how to decide between multiple install candidates?

There are atleast three variants of the rtl 8812 ( AE, AU, BU ), which one do you have ?
Is this an usb or PCIe adapter ?
What is the modelnr & revision from TPlink ?

Once you figure that out, use the link above to determine which driver you need.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Re: [SOLVED] how to decide between multiple install candidates?

Bus 001 Device 002: ID 2357:0101 TP-Link RTL8812AU Archer T4U 802.11ac
its a usb adapter.. right now I have the  rtl8812au422-dkms-git 4.2.2.r7502.gc20130507aur2-1
and it seems to work for now..
Historically using linux, Ive had this adapter work fine for a while and then just crap out.
I had a script set up that would remove the kernel module and then reload it and it would work fine again for a while.

Ill see how it goes.  Thanks for the info.

looks like the
rtl8812au422-dkms-git 4.2.2.r7502.gc20130507aur2-1  using kernel
Linux archlinux 4.19.87-1-lts #1 SMP Sun, 01 Dec 2019 16:23:25 +0000 x86_64 GNU/Linux

has been stable for me for my

Bus 001 Device 002: ID 2357:0101 TP-Link RTL8812AU Archer T4U 802.11ac

for the last few days! wink
