Well I finally got vmplayer up with win98 installed.
This is not what I had expected...
1 .The screen is ONLY 640x480 ?? Why can't I resize it?
2. It is too slow to be useful - even the mouse only moves a little bit and I have a trackball that skirts all over the desktop.
I've got vmplayer configured with 256MB on a 1GB machine. But this is much slower than win4lin. With win4lin, the mouse was reasonable and I could resize the desktop to fit somewhere around 1024 - 1152 (one of them.)
Any suggestions ?
Is anyone using win4lin with 2.6.15 kernel patched with their hacked up patches?
Thanks.

install vmware-tools. you may find some tutorials by browsing the web.
better yet, install vmware-server (it's free) and you'll forget about vmplayer... vmware-tools is included in vmware-server.

Well, browsing the vmware forums, they talked about vmware-server not
being good for graphical environments. Its setup for backend stuff.
But I'll look at the tools to see what's what...
Thanks.

I use vmplayer without either of those problems. I run it at 1024x768 and the speed is better than any other virtualization software I've tried.

they may say so, becaus they want you to buy vmware workstation. but it works just fine, as many users have reported.

What template did you start with to build your vmplayer image?
I'll try vmware-server to see what the difference is. Hope I can configure the display... Maybe I need a different template to start out with.
We'll see...

you'll get jumpy graphics in vmware unless you install vmware-tools. Under vmware-server there's just a menu option and it does it for you.
vmware server I used no 'template'. I just put the windows CD in the drive, followed the create new vm wizard, and it booted up, went through the windows install, and I had a workin windows in vmware-server.

yes, you don't need any template with vmware-server. installation and configurationis really straightforward.

vmware-server is installed again, this time I used the vmware tools. It seems acceptable and I was able to install with an IDE drive and the software I needed.
I'm disappointed that sharing files between the host and the guest OS is not easy. Win4lin makes the guest OS files just a directory.
Thus the host can get any file from the guest it wants.
Now I need to figure out my samba problems so I can print and swap files...
Thanks.

buy win4lin or vmware-workstation if you're not happy with free alternatives.

Speaking of speeding up vmware-server, is there anyway to use my actual graphics and sound cards? i.e be able to use the actual drivers.

no.
vmware emulates a VGA graphic card and a soundblaster compatible audio card. you can't use your own _real_ hardware on vmware machines, you're bound to use the default, stock ones.

What a bugger. Never mind. It's still cool playing with windows inside of linux though.

vmware 5.5 supports directx 8 to a certain extent but its very experimental. i tried playing with it and games run but not super fast. read the site though it sounds like this is the experimental stage (flat out says that), i'm expecting it to improve dramatically in the couple of versions
