Laptop freeze when attempting to suspend on 5.4

Hey folks,

This problem started happening a few days ago, and I've narrowed it down to the 5.4 kernel upgrade (downgraded to 5.3.13 and the bug goes away). Whenever I try to suspend (either shutting the laptop lid or systemctl suspend), the system simply freezes. The screen stays exactly as it was before the suspend, but nothing is responsive, and I'm forced to do a hard power-off. I couldn't find anything suspicious in logs. journalctl gives these lines right before the reboot:

12月 08 22:54:59 elara kernel: Linux version 5.4.1-arch1-1 (linux@archlinux) (gcc version 9.2.0 (GCC)) #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri, 29 Nov 2019 13:37:24 +0000
12月 08 22:54:59 elara kernel: microcode: microcode updated early to revision 0xca, date = 2019-10-03
-- Reboot --
12月 08 22:54:12 elara kernel: PM: suspend entry (s2idle)
12月 08 22:54:12 elara systemd-sleep[873]: Suspending system...
12月 08 22:54:12 elara systemd[1]: Starting Suspend...
12月 08 22:54:12 elara systemd[1]: Reached target Sleep.

I'm at a loss as to how to go about debugging this further. I saw there are a few other threads about Sky Lake freezing, but I'm not sure if this is related. I'm running on an X1 Carbon with i7-8565U.

Thanks in advance for any tips!

Re: Laptop freeze when attempting to suspend on 5.4

Hi!

I have the same issue since a about a week and am just now trying to figure it out. My journalctl log looks very similar and I'm also running an HP Elitebook 830 G6 with i7 8565U and Intel 620 graphics. It happens even from tty without a prior X session or anything else running.

Thanks!

Check whether what's discussed here makes a difference: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=250863

Re: Laptop freeze when attempting to suspend on 5.4

This might be a different problem. I tried people's suggestion of setting init_on_alloc=0, and it didn't help. Also, that thread is talking about the upgrade 5.3.11 to 5.3.12 breaking suspend. I'm at 5.3.13, and suspend is working fine, so my problem is somewhere between that and 5.4.1.

I haven't had time to bisect yet, as suggested by loqs, will report back if I get to it in the next few days.
