[Solved] Picom fails on startup with "failed to create picture"

When I start picom with the default config, I get the following error:
"[x_create_picture_with_pictfmt_and_pixmap ERROR] failed to create picture"

Picom runs but does not do anything, except change my wallapaper to solid gray. My usual wallpaper returns when I quit picom. I can't find a configuration that doesn't do this. In particular, changing the backend to xrender does not help.

I'm on a current Arch install, running i3-gaps. I have a 25" Asus IPS monitor with an AMD RX 580 graphics card (single monitor setup). Picom version is v7.5.

glxinfo gives the following:
OpenGL vendor string: X.Org
OpenGL renderer string: Radeon RX 580 Series (POLARIS10, DRM 3.35.0, 5.4.1-arch1-1, LLVM 9.0.0)
OpenGL core profile version string: 4.5 (Core Profile) Mesa 19.2.7

What logs can I look at to determine what the issue is? My suspicion is that it's a driver problem, but I'd like to confirm that before giving up.

Update: See the github for the resolution. Installing feh fixes the issue.

Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I get the same results after upgrading mesa (and all other packages) and rebooting.

Edit: Based on Googling for similar errors, I'm starting to think this is some problem with Xorg, not Picom. In particular, it turns out that Xorg is not detecting my monitor correctly and gave it the wrong size and dpi, which I was able to fix by manually adding these options to my Org config. But I suspect there are other things not being detecting correctly that are causing the error.

I uninstalled picom and installed the picom-git development version, and in addition to the above error I get the debug output
