Tigervnc not recognised from viewer on Mac OS X

I am trying to connect to a tigervnc server which is running on my Arch desktop computer.  I am using the Mac OS X tigervnc viewer downloaded via Homebrew Cask to connect to this desktop.  I've recently had to uninstall realvnc-vnc-server because when I installed it I had to uninstall tigervnc (so I didn't want any clashing packages).  Then I reinstalled tigervnc and reconfigured it.

I run

vncserver

Which seems okay from the log file.  However, now when I try to connect from my mac I get this message: unable to resolve host by name: nodename nor servname provided, or not known...

Any idea what could be causing this?  It might have something to do with clashing packages?

Name resolution, you need it, whether it be done by DNS or hosts file or whatever.

Edit: If you can't ping it by name, you can't connect to it by name.

Thanks for your response Zod.  Sorry, but I'm very new to this; I don't fully understand what has to be done.  How would I go about pinging it by name?  Thanks again!

How do you

try to connect from my mac

?
The error suggest you're passing the hostname of the desktop, but there's nothing (eg. your dhcp server, avahi, wins, …) to resolve that hostname. Try to connect it by its IP.

Re: Tigervnc not recognised from viewer on Mac OS X

jakewilliami, you have read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/TigerVNC ?

What name or ip-address does your archlinux server have ?

I know very little about MAC systems, how would you verify connectivity from your mac to another device ?
Use that method to verify you can reach the arch vncserver.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky
