[Solved]Black screen at GDM unless I go to rescue mode first

When booting, I get a black screen with a blinking cursor when GDM tries to start. However, if I boot into rescue mode first (add 'single' to the end of the linux line in grub), then simply press Control-D to continue, everything boots normally. Could there be something that is getting loaded in the wrong order or something, but booting into rescue mode first allows it to load?

I have a bit of an odd setup, Arch is installed on an external USB drive. Initially I was able to boot the computer directly from it, and also to run it inside VMWare. It seemed to work fine switching between the two modes. But then I think it broke when I installed open-vm-tools. After that I need to go to rescue mode first. Removing open-vm-tools did not fix it.

Please let me know if I can add more information to help. Thanks.
