DVB

Anyone is using DVB here?
I have SkyStar 2.6c with SG-2100.
I know how to use it under Linux, I was using it in Slackware with vdr and vdr-xine and few other interesting plugins.
Now I want to configure it under Arch, and probably create some PKGBUILDs to make it easy.
Anyone to share experiences?

One of my friends tried to use SkyStar 2 in Arch but I don't know if he managed to do this. I'll ask him in the following 2-3 days.

Note that this article is outdated - instructions are for devfsd. But I think udev will create all needed device files for you automatically, so you can skip this step.

I'm sure I created some PKGBUILDs for VDR and some of it's plugins back in the days when I owned a DVB-S card. Unfortunately I'm unable to find them, I guess I've deleted them already.
I'll have a look again and post anything I find here.

DVB is much more complex subject than others.

First, one should have drivers installed - this is OK with Arch kernel.

Another step is to scan for channels. Scan utility is in linuxtv-dvb-apps which is in community. Small problem is that one should know how to scan and how to store the result.

How to watch television? You can use vdr, but you need plugin for rendering! Because SkyStar2 is not "full featured DVB card" it needs software mpeg decoder, and vdr doesn't support that. There are few plugins for vdr, but best one was vdr-xine - which requires modified version of xine - so xine from Arch package won't work.

There are also other application which supports DVB, but I tried kaffeine or xawtv (IIRC new version should support also DVB), but they refuses to work.

AFAIK nobody configured Casablanca correctly. But it is possible to use SkyNet in Linux. SkyNet is sniffer-like application which reads stream from the satelite and stores files you want on your harddrive. Files are transmitted with speed 10Mbs.

I use SG2100 motor, which requires vdr plugin. I wasn't able to find any external application which can drive motor. Maybe it's easier to create one, then add some nice TK gui.

And there are much more plugins to install, there are issues with recording, transcoding video to divx or at least to format supported by external DVD player..... Lots of things to do.
