ThinkPad touchpad receives continuous random input after prolonged use

I'm having a rather strange problem with my ThinkPad T480 running Linux 5.5.1 with XFCE. When using the touchpad for about 5-10 minutes, it starts receiving random input, moving the cursor in a random directions and shaking it. The interval between the receiving the random inputs becomes shorter and shorter until I can't move the cursor manually with the touchpad at all. The only way to re-enable the touchpad at this point is to reboot, but the problem then comes back again after another 5-10 minutes of use. When all this is happening, the trackpoint still works fine.

After consulting the Arch wiki, I found the article on the ThinkPad T480; the article says that the touchpad should work out of the box. I'm pretty lost as to what could be causing this issue so I would really appreciate some help.

I am using the 'xf86-input-libinput' package.
