xrandr refresh rate not applying

I am running:

 xrandr --output HDMI-A-1 --mode 2560x1440 --rate 143.91

The mode is reported by my monitor and in the output of xrandr:

The screen briefly turns off when I run the command however xrandr still reports 60hz. I have also tried adding a new mode "2560x1440_144.00" with modeline generated by

cvt 2560 1440 144.00

and a few other refresh rates, all supported by my monitor; however with adding modes I cannot set them, xrandr returns an error. The 144Hz mode works fine on windows, so nothing wrong with gpu/hdmi cable support. I am using amdgpu with a fully updated system.
